It probably just vaporized in the atmosphere. 
Ironic I had just read about this about a month ago, shit could have been worse.

Technology and knowing that it is going to be in that place at that time. They had no clue these meteors were coming, so they would not have had time to "shoot them down"

Creepy that it happened on the same day that asteroid 2012 DA14 passed by within 17,000 miles of us, closer than some satellites are. But they say its unrelated.
And as far as predictability, there is no way to see all of them coming. I mean, we only know about 10% or so of the asteroids around us, there is no way we can see every single little one coming. If a huge one ever hit us, more than likely we would have little to no warning anyway. might as well live without fear of those flying rocks!

I'd just like to mention: one of the reasons it's unlikely that they intercepted it is this: the reason meteors and shit burn up in the atmosphere is because the friction disintegrates them because of how fast they are moving. I'm not sure we have many missiles that move at those speeds. 33,000 Miles Per Hour, (33,000/60)=550 Miles Per Minute, (33,000/60)= 9 and 4/30ths Miles per Second, or (9.13*1.6)=14.69 Kilometers per second.
That's fuckin fast.
A quick google search shows our fastest missile to be nowhere near those speeds.
But if you want to think it think it, i just wanted to put that into perspective.

Not that I think they shot it down, but its not like they had to catch up with it. They could have triangulated its speed vs the missiles location and then its just a matter of angles and timing, no?
I really don't know what I'm talking about because I'm god awful at math, but it seems like the possibility is there.

Plotting an intercept course would require foreknowledge of the exact trajectory of an irregularly shaped object as it enters the atmosphere. There would be no way to calculate what direction it would go upon entry.
The meteor would have had to been taken out on it's orbital approach BEFORE it entered the atmosphere, but nobody saw it coming.
