Pedagogy of the Oppressed
Link to the Book

Wiki

It opens my eyes to how important education really is, it has helped reinforce how badly I want to teach and help move policy to increase science literacy. Critical thinking is almost outlined in the scientific method, and also the steps to problem solving. It has help combine the side of me wanting to teach science, making my students better future-adults; and the side of me thinking about my hate of the establishment. My kinship to those oppressed as I myself was, of those more oppressed than I was, and my desire to not allow oppression to continue.

Apparently Paulo Freire's thoughts were supported by revolutionaries like Che Guevara, but also peaceful revolutionaries like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

To Freire Sectarianism and Radicalization were two opposites. Sectarianism instills in minds that the world we live in is a static place, these are the facts, don't question as we are just loading your brain with facts so you can prove you know them. Radicalization is the realization of the world as a non-static place, and that each of us are actors in transforming the world into it's next state. I don't understand why this isn't such a common read for education majors, a cursory glance makes it seem like he is taught more in philosophy classes than in education! I actually had a talk with my Instructor about the book and she talked about how much she loves the book, and that's why she assigns Paulo Freire as a research topic, but not his book.

Anyone else reading something awesome?

Isnt there already one of these threads here? Maybe it's Shroomery...

I am reading 2 things currently; 1, I am about to finish the 2nd book of Chronicles of Nick saga (it's about a 5 out of 10 but kept me entertained at times)

And the one I just put down for a little bit, Star Wars: The Phantom Menance

I thought so too, but i couldn't find one.

I just got through a huge fictional sci-fi binge of a 13 book series. I never read any of the Star Wars books.

I just finished the third book in Ender's Saga recently and have been on a bit of a Terry Pratchett/Discworld kick. Currenty switching back and forth between Phillip K. Dick's 'Do Android's Dream of Electric Sheep' and Pratchett's 'Mort.' Having a Nook is awesome

Great one! Especially if you have a working knowledge of the events preceding and following the book.  If not, it can be a bit dry.

I love this series.  Ender's game felt like a "hook" to get people reading, and then Card just smashes a year's worth of philosophy into Children of the Mind and Xenocide.

I'm currently reading Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin...incredible author, masterful use of the language.  It really reminds me of how strong and beautiful the English language can be.
As I read it, I was reminded of a quote by Whitman, and subsequently looked it up since the masters put it better than I do:

"The English language befriends the grand American expression. . . . it is brawny enough and limber and full enough. On the tough stock of a race who through all change of circumstance was never without the idea of political liberty, which is the animus of all liberty, it has attracted the terms of daintier and gayer and subtler and more elegant tongues. It is the powerful language of resistance . . . it is the dialect of common sense. It is the speech of the proud and melancholy races and of all who aspire. It is the chosen tongue to express growth faith self-esteem freedom justice equality friendliness amplitude prudence decision and courage. It is the medium that shall well nigh express the inexpressible." -Walt Whitman

The Series was Gaunts Ghosts, it was an amazing ride. It's not even over yet, I think i'm a book back. And basically the writer has said the series will go on until all the main characters die.

It's from Warhammer 40k though, so everyone should die relatively soon. Me and my friends who have read it have epic talks about the specific soldiers. Mad Larkin is the best, he's an insane sniper that gets seizures (who is a pretty nice guy). He uses his scope to "see the truth" and is prone to using it as an eyepiece.

I'd say more, but it's such a good series i would never spoil it to someone that hasn't read it.
