Cactus HELP
    #623104 - 05/16/12 09:26 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

It's only affected on the very top, everything under the top 2 inches is a healthy green, only the taller one is affected

hasn't been watered in a long time, so overwatering can be ruled out... Peruvian Torch

What season is it there and how much direct sun are they getting each day?

Also, how much are you watering them and have you sprayed anything else on them?

It looks as if they're going to start rotting. If that happens then you'll have to amputate the poor bugger to stop it from spreading.

8-10 hours of full sunlight, haven't watered in long time, will do that tomorrow...

How do I prevent rotting? I'll cut it and put some fungicide on it I guess

How long have you had these cacti? Also, do you know what conditions they were in before you got them?

I'm thinking it might be sunburn. The photo is a bit deceiving to my eyes so I can't tell the size and thickness. However, if they aren't that big and you got them from someone who had them growing in less intense conditions, such as in a greenhouse or cooler climate that had less sun, then they might not be accustomed to you putting them into intense sunlight for 10 hours each day.

Some younger cacti I had got too much sun last Summer and started to change colour from sunburn. I put them in a shadier spot and they came good although one didn't pull through but it was very small.

If your cacti start to rot then you cut off the rotting section plus a little more and throw it away. Your cacti will form a callous and eventually new pups will grow from that point.

Also, if you use fertiliser on them then dilute it so it's not full strength otherwise you risk harming your babies.

I experienced some rot in a bridgesii pup a few months ago. I had to chop it off to save it. I believe I watered it too much. I learnt my lesson though.

it's always easier to correct underwatering than overwatering.  Especially with cacti and most other succulent plants.

PS doesn't sunburn on cactus usually form that hard gray crust over the skin?  That looks almost like the damage would be soft and pulpy.  If I'm correct on both assumptions, I would wager it's some type of physical damage (maybe someone knocked it over), or some type of rot

So if this grey crust or w/e is accompanied by the "rot", it may just be adjusting to the amount of sunlight?

what does the area damaged feel like?  Is it soft and mushy, or still solid feeling?  And the grey crust forms where the actual damage occurs

PS what are your night time temps like, and is it in an area where the top might be getting hit with wind?

The picture in the OP looks like scabbing due to sunburn. The second picture, however, is perfectly normal. That is scabbing from some sort of mechanical trauma (scratch, puncture, etc.). No mature cactus on Earth lacks them unless it's a lucky fucker.

Is the gray tissue soft (like mushy)? This is what indicates rot. If the tissue is still firm, merely put the cactus in more filtered light. You might want to invest in some shade cloth.

Yeah, when one of my pups looked like that and one part started to show some black it felt a bit soft and mushy. I poke it with a cactus spike and was able to squeeze stuff out. I amputated the bitch after that.
