Im currently building my own LED grow box. Its still in the infant stage but coming along nicely. paid around $0.80 per 1w LED already soldered to a pcb board. I also got lenses for the LEDs because the angle of the led beam was about 140, I got 30deg angle lenses to focus the light. I have roughly 200 of them going to be going into the box. the power supplies are going to cost me around $65 for 200w of power, currently we are powering it with ATX power supply out of a computer. other materials we are using are cheap, actually had they laying around also. 1' wide roll of flashing to mount the LEDs and cheap 1/4'' particle board type stuff to mount the strips to. The box is 2x2x5 currently but like i said this is the early stages.

Ive got about $300 into the project right now but there are many plus sides to the LED lights. No heat means my plant can literally grow against the light and not burn. These LEDs are the correct spectrum (nm) needed for plant development (blue/red), i added about 20 white into the mix for any other wavelengths and about 10 green. I read that green inhances white better than just 30 white alone + the green can be turned on at night so you can work in the dark and not mess up the light schedule.

DIY LED grow lights are the way to go. They have a life span of 10-15 years per LED, remember I only paid roughly a $1 for. There is a learning curve and much research to be done but when this box is done it will be EXACTLY what the plant needs for optimal growth and no more, no less.

EDIT: ill let you know how it goes, was the whole point of me posting here. New to growery, been a shroomery member for awhile now.

I've tried searching the internet and the forum but cannot seem to be able to find any information on the use of LED lights and their implications compared to traditional lighting system/phases.

Thoughts, links, information?

LED Lights have many advantages over tradition lighting.
LED grow lights are very efficient, and a higher percentage of the light emitted is consumed by plants.
LED grow lights can help gardeners save on their electricity bills, and not waste energy.
Plants will also need less watering because of the lower temperatures in the grow room.
LED grow lights produce zero noise, compared to the buzzing sounds made by other lighting systems.
The benefits of low energy consumption, low maintenance costs, and heat-free operation of LED grow lights are making them favored by more and more gardeners.

LEDS aren't heat free.

OK so i may be a stoned buffoon- my camera takes jpeg files which this site doesn't accept. Id be happy to post pictures if there is a reasonably easy way to convert them to an acceptable format=) any easy solution?

This site DEFINITELY takes  .jpg files. Click on the "pics" link in the top left, and then "upload"

as you requested....

http://www.emc.maricopa.edu/faculty/farabee/biobk/biobookps.html

I know these are right, I go to college for horticulture.
"The color of the pigment comes from the wavelengths of light reflected"
What color are the leaves of your plants? green/yellow
That means blues reds oranges are absorbed and used for photosynthesis.

more info
http://www.ehow.com/how-does_5185470_color-light-effect-plant-growth_.html

there is an exact science to what percentages of NM need to be used to get the best results while producing a healthy plant. You can choose what NM is used in your LED light, you cannot do this with HPS/MH. you can get in the right ball park but you are still using watts to push out that green/yellow which is a large percentage of what light is coming from them.

There is no heat coming from my 1w LEDs pushed at their peak performance. There is a TON of heat coming from my HPS which is wasted energy.

one last link

http://www.ecofitlighting.com/hid-vs-led.html

EDIT: Recap for those too lazy or stubborn to read the information...

LED lights make it possible to:
1.Focus full potential of light without reflectors which degrade the light.
2. Use correct % of spectrum (nm) of light that plants use for photosynthesis.
3. No heat which means no temp problems and no burning even when plants are touching the lens.

This truly depends on the unit itself.
I've seen a many of sunburn plants under LED, granted this isn't really heat related, but does happen with high powered chip sets.
And yes it's a bit slower here thna the shroomery, we don't have their member count yet.

http://www.wayjun.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=21&products_id=682

those are what I am currently using, no the LEDs do not make enough heat to burn plants through the lens. they are roughly .5'' thick and the LED sits on the back of it.

Edit: Just look at what you said again. Im using 1w LEDs. What are the symptoms you are talking about "sunburn"
