So I made my own net pot... will it work? Any reason why it would not? I have probably spent more than I should have already and didn't think 10.00 for a net pot was really worth it....

There's no reason it wouldn't work. Might cleanup the loose bits of plastic a little, don't want any of that to get into pumps and such. I made my own net pots out of 6 inch flower pots back in the day, worked just fine.

Better still, get a pool noodle (long flotation foam device), cut off a section to wrap around your plant and skip both the net pot and the medium (hydroton or whatever).
But yeah, clean those sharp edges, so as not to cut the roots.

I wouldn't be able to grow from seed with a pool noodle thing. I start my seeds in rockwool.
