When I went to get my medical marijuana card and this cute girl who worked there was explaining how it all worked.
She said, "Twenty one days after you send in your papers to the state you will officially be legal, and the police will be able to see that because of the reciept on your temporary license. But, people have gone to dispensaries right after they send in they're papers and dispensaries will sell to you. So, if you do anything before the 21st day, then just be extra careful."
Did you wait twenty one days after sending in your papers or did you buy some medicine from a dispensary right away? I don't think I'll wait or have any real reason to, since if I do I'd just end up smoking weed from a dealer or something. 
It's pretty cool, being in a community where cannabis is just as accepted as tylenol.
I still have to get a few things from one of my doctors before I can send my papers in, I scheduled the soonest appointment they had which is in like six days, but I'm trying to see if I can get in sooner.

Found out an answer, while this law exists it's more of a technicality that no one really follows or gets arrested for.
that means that at the very latest in one week I will be legally and happily medicated

I don't know if you're in Cali or not if you are your fully legal as soon as you get the doctor notice saying you need weed. You also don't need to send in paper work to get the card. Here in Cali at least the only thing sending papers into the state does is put you at the top of the kick my door in list should there ever be changes to the law.
