getting a dog
    #554238 - 05/09/11 11:11 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I'm going to get a dog soon and I can't decide what breed to get. here's what I'm thinking in order of preference.

1 - beauceron
2 - boxer
3 - german short-haired pointer

I really would like a beauceron but I'm concerned about the daily exercise requirements. I enjoy taking walks and hiking but I'm not sure if that'd be enough for such a serious, domineering breed. also its hard as hell to find a breeder

boxer would be cool but I'm not crazy about the head structure. also I don't really want a dog that everyone has.

german short-haired pointers are cool too but they're a little small and I definitely want something that'd be ready to kick some ass if shit went down and I'm not sure whether the GSP would fit that ticket.

what I'm looking for in a dog is:
-large size
-above average intelligence
-protective nature
-short hair, little to no grooming

any suggestions from people who know dogs would be cool

I'd go with a doberman or a pitbull.

I love red noses! I have a lot of experience with pits, they're an awesome breed
however I'm concerned with people being scared to come over or let me rent from them knowing that I have a pit bull. they caught such a bad rap, it fucking pisses me off.
there's so many places that they're outright illegal to own. I'd hate to be restricted in where I can live because of the dog I have, especially now that I'm graduating and plan on moving around a lot

have you every owned one and tried to rent or moved around a lot with one?

Eh, I was just throwing out a couple of possibilities based solely on ability to kill/maim things.

I'm sure you could always check out the local pound to see what sorts of interesting mutts have shown up there. One of my friends has rescued all 3 of his dogs, and while they're all very different (two interesting mutts and a great dane), they're great dogs nonetheless.

I was actually just looking at a GSP/lab mix thats at a local rescue. they only want $200 for him. he's almost a year old now I feel like thats kinda old, I mean I know that's still a young dog but don't you ideally want to get a pup?

never owned my own dog before so I guess I don't know. I've done a lot of fostering and helped my good friend with breeding/raising his 5 pits. from that limited experience I figured it's best to get them straight from a breeder as puppies so that you have full control of their training. did your friend (or really anyone who has rescued before) run into any problems with adopted/rescued dogs?

Pits are very pleasant dogs asshole.  And if you want dangerous Irish Wolf Hounds were known to be able to fend of lions. (note I didn't say beat)  Something I would love to see a pit try.

No, the owners are a menace.  There is nothing inherently wrong with pits.  Most are bought by scumbags and they in turn raise them like shit.  A proper pit is no more harmful than any other breed of dog.

The rescue dogs my friend has rarely cause them major grief, if at all. Occasionally the Dane will kinda-pseudo chomp at peoples' hands, but a swift smack and some stern talking to by the owners tends to send the message that eating guests is frowned upon.

But that kind of behavior has been rare anyways, so I'd say they're pretty well behaved for the most part. And 1 year old is still fairly puppy-status IMO. And at that age you'll hopefully have avoided the teething/chewing everything phase, although you might have to do some simple housebreaking.

And I'll put my money on training not really being too much of an issue with a rescue. From what I've seen they tend to be extremely loyal pets, so unless the dog is an asshole by nature I'd think you'd be able to mold a suitable pet out of them.

Dog attacks happen with all sorts of animals. Just read the comments.

"Tam1969, I feel what you are saying, I was mauled and bitten by a Dalmation when I was 10 years old and still have the scars to prove it. Pitbull are not the only dogs that attack. "

"My arm was nearly severed between the wrist and elbow by a Black Lab. When I called the local press, they were not interested in reporting it because it was a Black Lab. If it had been a pit bull, they would have reported it. The press only report when pit bulls attack because it makes great headlines, but they ignore other breeds. There has never been a single fatal attack by a neutered/spayed pitbull kept as a family pet in this country. See http://nationalcanineresearchcouncil.com/ for all info on dog bites, etc"

Quit spewing your shit.

Or let's just ban all dogs unless they are declawed and detoothed!

Doesn't matter.  It's an issue of nurturing the dog not the intrinsic nature of the dog.
