Pandora's Box, 1k aero
    #546566 - 04/15/11 12:56 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

So, after prematurely obtaining four Pandora cuttings, my wife and I are FINALLY starting our first grow! This is our first grow that we've ever done on our own, and we're REALLY excited about it.

We have a 3 gallon black bucket with a grey lid. There are 6 1-1/2 inch neoprene inserts, one has the power cord for the water pump in the center of it, and the other has the tube for the air pump in it. There's also a second air tube in the same insert. I had found that because I was pumping air into the bucket, and spraying water onto every surface the water could escape, water would well up out of every crack it could. This second air tube helps alleviate the pressure.

Right now, the light is on 24/7, so it gets a little warm inside the room. We have the tent in our bedroom. The window is open about 10 inches, and a fan blowing cool air in was installed, and then cardboard put above it to control the air flow. Then we covered the window with a thick blanket to keep the light from shining across our backyard and into the neighbor's windows! lol After making a walk around the building to check out how it looked, I realized that our neighbor could still see right up into our bedroom through the fan!! So we brainstormed and came up with a ghetto-rigged air-funneller, thing. It actually works out well, because it forces to cold air over our ballast, which keeps it nice and cool.

^This pic shows the ghetto ass contraption we made to block the window fan. On the far left you can see the ballast there. I wish the ballast was just a little higher up, to take full advantage of the cold air flow, but

Here you can see the side of the fan and the cardboard contraption.

Here is a close up of the window fan.

My wife just filmed this short clip with her phone to piece it all together for ya (I tried to embed it and it didn't work. Maybe next time I'll figure it out)! Things I want to point out: our brand new 440CFM blower fan (it came with a carbon scrubber that we have decided we don't need to start using just yet), the magnetic ballast the company let me upgrade to for free (the digital one they sent originally was malfunctioning straight out of the box, so they sent me this one), and also the AWESOME tape job that we used on the blanket and cardboard around the window! :laugh2:

Also, the temp is fluctuating between 74 and 77. Is this where I want it to be for these babies, or do I want it higher? My wife in concerned that if the temperature in the tent is too high the water will be too hot.

Anyways, we're goin' to bed now! Night all!!

Edit: After watching the vid myself... :laugh2::laugh2::laugh2: @ the sideways camera!!!

So, after the second night, I have decided I have NOT fixed the leaking issues with the cloner...

We woke up to find 3 or 4 cups of water on the floor of the tent, and water all across the tops of the lid... anyone have any ideas as to why its still leaking??

I'm pretty sure it leaks because we went with the 1 1/2 " neoprene pucks and they didn't have any baskets. Now its not really the basket it self I think would help, its the perfectly smooth edge the basket would provide that I'm interested in. See the tool Tank used to make the holes, a spade bit, left the edges kinda gappy. I'm hoping the basket would lip over the rough edge and give the neoprene a smooth surface to snug into...
That or we use a different bit to make the holes...
Any suggestions?

mmmmmmm It begins!

Yea sideways camera was lulz it was kinda tripping me out...

Wish I could help out with the aero setup, but I have zero experience with anything requiring a pump in a grow.  I think Mrs. Tank is on to something though about the net pots...
Hmm, maybe even with the relief hose there's still too much pressure just in the water... What I mean is maybe your spray tips are too forceful and they're forcing water out.
Could you find a way to bleed off some extra pressure somewhere like by adding some more 360 tips or extra holes or something?

Adding extra holes in the pvc for the water wouldn't be a problem, but I don't want to lose so much pressure that the sprayers don't reach the roots, ya know?

But it doesn't seem that its being "sprayed" out... its just welling up around each of the neoprene pucks... then if I haven't noticed the water yet, it just seems to almost have a siphoning effect as it starts to pour over the edge of the top...

Bits like the one above are meant for drilling holes, perfect for thing like what you're doing so you create a perfect circle each time.  Cost like 5-10 bucks at any hardware shope

I used a spade bit like this one:

The 1-1/2 inch spade bit was $6.50 whereas the 1-1/2 inch hole bit was $14...

But the water wells up out of holes that are smooth too, which is why I'm hesitant to spend another $15 on a tool I'm not positive will fix the problem...

So, it seems to have stopped leaking today... I don't know what the issue is with it now... lol.

The girls seems a bit more perked up, the smaller two looking better than the bigger two... I'm a little worried about some yellowing on the tip of one of the babies. It looks like the tip got clipped off somehow during the move, and now there's a splotch of yellow I don't like... lol

Does that look like normal yellowing to you guys?

We also realized today we were supposed to have some of the Thrive Alive B-1 Red in the mix, so I added a tbsp of that to the water...

I wouldn't even worry about the thrive alive b-1. It really won't change a thing.

Well, we're using the techniflora "Recipe for Success", and we're gonna follow it through the whole way this time...

Anyways, we're going to bed for the night... here's the last look at them for the night. Definitly looking better. The two smaller definitely are gonna make it. The larger two still have some recovering to do it looks like...

Shit, I don't know. Something about how light works. I was explained it once, but don't remember. It only happens with growing lights though, I think...

The biggest of the four is starting to stand much straighter this morning! I'm glad its finally deciding to stand up on its own... I was getting worried about it. The last one is still a bit wilked though... my hopes for that one to survive are slowly deflating. But, 3 out of 4 isn't a bad survival rate for my first cuttings, is it??

The lines I believe maybe linked to magnetic ballasts because my 1000's always did it. 1500's dont but that I believe is because of the digital ballast. I used to think it was lumens that caused it but I'm inclined now to say its the ballast.

Yeah I think it has something to do with the refresh rate of the camera vs. pulse rate of the ballast?  Anyway, my cell phone does it but my camera does not, so maybe try a different camera?

Hell yeah man looks like a cool cloner! I'm thinking the cuttings look a little wilted, and thought I might suggest trimming the fan leaves to be half length and also increasing the humidity. It could definitely help them out. But that's just my two cents. I'm really looking forward to seeing this grow develop!!!

Man, I was totally going to go get a humidity dome today at the hydro shop! I was there today, too!!!

So, no one has actually answered our question about what temperature we should shoot for... I know it's kind of a no0b question, but I've never cloned before... lol.

Well, the little girls are lookin' good so far today. The last one to stand up is still taking a bit to perk up completely. The leaves are still a bit soft and limp...

We decided to have another go at making a leak-free lid for the cloner. We got 2" net pots and neoprene sleeves and a new lid. I also forked out the $16 bucks for the hole bit rather than the spade bit, and we drilled holes. Then my wife put a bead of silicone around each of the net pots (after we cut the bottoms off so the roots wouldn't get caught in them), to try and eliminate the leakage. Tomorrow night the silicone will be dry enough to test out. we're really hoping this will do the trick.
