Plants recovering from possible nutrient deficiency.
    #538375 - 03/20/11 09:21 AM (13 years, 13 days ago)

1. Are you growing from seed or clones?
feminized seeds.

2. How old are your plants?
3 weeks and 5 days (about)

3. How tall are your plants?
3" - 4"

4. What size containers are they planted in?
2 gallon pot.

5. What is your soil mix?
Started with "Light Warrior" then transplanted to "Ocean Forrest"

6. How often do you water and what type of water do you use?
Whenever soil is dry. (about every 2 days)

7. What is the pH of your water?
7.0 (vial tested)

8. What kind of fertilizer do you use and what is its NPK ratio?
None.

9. Do you foliar feed or spray your plants with anything?
None.

10. What kind of lights do you use and how many watts combined? (HPS, MH, fluorescent, halogen, incandescent "plant lights")
600W HPS

11. How close are your lights to the plants?
12" (about)

12. What size is your grow space in square feet?
8sqft (2' x 4')

13. What is the temperature and humidity in your grow space?
75 - 85 (about)

14. What is the pH of the soil?
6.5 (vail tested)

15. Have you noticed any insect activity in your grow space?
None.

16. How much experience do you have growing?
I've worked with growers before and have helped harvest a crop. This is my first "solo" grow however.

I started these seedlings in Fox Farm "Light Warrior" and I was pretty oblivious to how little nutrition this soil mix had. After about 2 weeks of growth, the lower leaves began to "dry up" and yellow at the very tips of the leaves, slowly crawling back towards the stems of the plant. At first I thought it was nutrient burn, which didn't make sense to me because I had fed no nutrients to these plants and the "Light Warrior" wasn't supposed to be strong enough to burn seedlings. Throughout the week the plants kept getting progressively worse and their growth was significantly slowed. As well, each plant had some weird symptom that the other plants didn't (red stems, deformed growth, curling leaves)

After doing a little bit of research, I came to the conclusion that it was either my nutrients or my pH. At week 3, I transplanted the seedlings into 2 gallon pots filled with Fox Farm "Ocean Forrest"; I noticed that the roots of each plant had indeed reached the bottom of the solo cup and that could have been a contributing factor to the slowed growth. I also tested the pH of my water and soil with my vial test kit, and everything appeared to be ok on the pH side of things (7.0 water, 6.5 soil run-off).

The first day or two after the transplant there where few signs of recovery. However, on the 3rd day after the transplant, the plants appeared darker in areas where there was new growth and the plants began to take off growing again. I'm now on day 5 after the transplant and the plants are undoubtably doing betting; new growth is nice and green, not deformed). Each plant has probably grown at least an inch in the past few days.

However, the lower leaves ( first 2 sets of "real" leaves ) of the plants are still in pretty bad shape. Although generally the yellowing has slowed, the leaves are still pretty dry and break easy.

Is it normal for the lower leaves to not recover while having the new growth thats very healthy?

Good job.  The leaves that got damage will stay damaged so don't worry about it.  Just as long as your new growth looks good and healthy (which it does) your plants will be fine.

I personally wouldn't but if you hate the look of the dead leaf you can crumble that away with your fingers or cut it off (leave any green parts of the damaged leaf still on the plant).

How long are you going to wait to start your feeding schedule?

The guy at the hydroponics shop said that the "Ocean Forrest" should have enough nutes for them for about another 2 weeks, then I will start feeding them nutes.

Glad to hear my babies are now doing just fine :-)

Did you cut your OF soil down with anything like perlite, peat, or verm?  FF soil is extremely hot and if you didn't cut it enough your plants may be getting too much food.

OF is to hot.
Had this same problem. Not every bag but one particular.
Need to mix with some light warrior. Do 50/50 to start.

Had to wash the soil away to save the plant.Looks good today.

Yeah, I started these guys in 100% Light Warrior for 3 weeks, THEN I moved them to the OF, it was a nut def. not a nut burn.

Hey guys, I just thought I would give a small update on the plants and ask a few questions.

It's been a week and a few days since the transplant and these guys are GROWING FAST lol. However the leaves are starting to curl up a bit and I was wondering if that was a sign of over-watering?

A few more weeks then I'll change the light cycle to 12/12 and watch these laddies flower.

It's either heat stress or overfeeding.

Again, if you did not cut your FFOF with anything, then you are going to have some hot soil for awhile.  That + mid 80 degree temps can make your plants act the way they are.  I would back the light off a few more inches, at least until the nutes get used up a bit.

I'm at the same point as you and I cut my OF with 30% perlite.  I'm still getting a bit of what your getting and my temps are 76-81.

These guys are almost 6 weeks old, they are old enough to handle the amount of nutrients in FFOF. Raised the light a little, but I think they just sorta grew out of it on their own. Alternate branches are forming and the 2 weeks is almost up for the FFOF.

I went and bought some Botanicare Pure Blend Pro Grow at the hydro shop today and the guy says to start using it when the leaves start to yellow again.
