light question
    #495091 - 11/04/10 03:35 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

I have one 400watt metal halide and one 400watt sodium projectors & I'm growing on soil
does the lights cover 1.5 x 1.5 meter space?
how far should the light be from the plants?
and should I use only metal halide during vegetative and only sodium on flowering or both together?
thanks

Well we're not really going to be able to tell you what the footprint of the reflected light will be, unless someone here has experience with that exact model of hood.

You should just plug it in and hang it, and see what it will cover.

as far as how close to the plants they should be, get them as close as possible without it getting the plants too hot.  to judge this put your hand at the top of the plants and see if it's comfortable there.  if it's uncomfortable for your hand, then its not good for your plant.

I can not get the model number or manufacturer name from your pics.  If you supply those I might be able to get your distribution pattern.

The manufacturer does not list technical specs, but DieselB's 4' x 4' (or 1.5m x 1.5m) suggestion is about right.  I am certain that the reflector is not going to throw light in an even square pattern.  That type of fixture is not meant for even lighting of an area, it is a flood for general purpose directional lighting.

The best way to tell what shape the light is coming out in would be to turn on the fixture in a dark room.  Look at how it shines against a wall.  You should be able to see a pretty well defined box of light on the wall, with some light spill creating a haze around it.  You may need to move closer or further from the wall to see it clearly.

Your light should be as close as possible to the plants without burning them.  I would start at 24" distance and gradually move it closer.  You can use a cheap infrared thermometer to pickup what the temperatures are on the soil or plant surfaces.
