Is the bulb narrow and around 6" long with contacts on both ends? From the limited information it sounds like a halogen light to me because, I'm not aware of any other bulbs that commonly come in 500w varieties. Halogen lights are not suitable for growing or evening using safely indoors.

its a very small light bulb but REALLY bright, i have plants growing outside and i needed a lamp to grow them inside because fall is coming and they are not big enough

I'm 99% sure its a halogen and its a fire hazard to use it inside, those bulbs put off a ton of heat. On top of that the spectrum of light they emit is mostly useless for growing any type of plant. If you don't have much money to spend on a grow light get some compact florescent bulbs or a low wattage high pressure sodium.

I think Amnesiac is right.
Go to an online grow supplier. You will be able to see the kind of bulb you need.
