Blackstrap vs. First/Second Molasses (Harry?)
    #489209 - 10/18/10 05:16 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

I've always heard that blackstrap molasses is the best bet for cannabis.  However, I was searching around to find out if they have it at Walmart (they don't) and I found a lot of talk about Grandma's Molasses being used instead.  It doesn't seem to be blackstrap, but many people swear by it.

I understand the difference between blackstrap, first, and second molasses as far as how it's made, but not as far as what would be most useful for cannabis.  This excerpt from wiki suggests to me that blackstrap is the best:

Quote:

The calorie content of blackstrap molasses is still mostly from the small remaining sugar content. However, unlike refined sugars, it contains significant amounts of vitamins and minerals. Blackstrap molasses is a source of calcium, magnesium, potassium, and iron

I'm going to get some blackstrap, but I'd like your thoughts on if first or second is as effective.

I too had trouble finding blackstrap, so I tried the Grandma's.. I couldn't notice any kind of difference whatsoever. Think I'm just gonna order it online once I'm ready to flower.

you can get Real Organic Blackstrap at any Health food / organic / co-op type place. they just don't sell it at most grocery stores because people don't buy it much

Yup. Any organic/natural food stores will carry it. I picked mine up for 3-4 dollars.

Now the last time I was at the hydro store one of the owners tried telling me that it takes upwards to a month for the molasses to break down in the soil and become benefitial to the plant.

Anyone heard anything like this?

break down??  maybe some nutes but the sugar is instant. maybe it lasts a month before bacteria eat it all up.

I can get blackstrap, so I'm going to do that.  I was more just wanting to know about what's going on down in the root zone, why blackstrap is better/worse than other options, etc.  We don't have much discussion on the topic of molasses on these boards, and I notice even Google doesn't turn up much useful talk on the difference between the two from a cannabis perspective.

I've actually never used blackstrap just because I already had like 5 jars of regular extra dark molasses sitting around. I think the only reason blackstrap would be better is because the sugars are potentialls more complex since they don't refine it, and because it's slightly higher in Mg, and K

I use Grandmas. Seems to do what its supposed to. It certainly doubles to tripples the smell...can't say on the flavor, as I don't have any grows of the same strain not using it to compare to. But the smell is noticeably stronger within 24 hours of feeding it.

Oh, and for what its worth, I only used that particular brand because I found it in my spice cabinet  :2cents:

Of course it's happening inside your head.
Why should that mean it isn't real?

Thanks Harry and RasJeph, that's what I was looking for.
Sounds like I'm going to have to refill my carbon filter before this!

Yeah, I've seen between 1 tsp and 1 tbs per gallon suggested.

A tablespoon sounds like a lot to me. Especially for hydro. I sometimes add a tablespoon per gal to teas but then dilute before feeding with it.

A tsp per gal is plenty in my opinion.

do you guys think MADHAVA's Agave Nectar would do the same. it is a natural un processed sweetener witch gives the promise that it will not crystallize. has the same amount of sugar but none of the extras like the 1 u guys are raving about.

I know someone who keeps bees and he gives me tons of pure honey. If the main thing in the blackstrap is unrefined sugar, would pure honey work as well?

if you got it from a bee keeper id think it would be unrefined sugar. or natural sugar as it is.

my only concern is during the summer it would attract all kinds of bugs using sugar based stuff.

I've gone as high as two or three tablespoons per gallon without any ill effects, but that was in hempy buckets which technically speaking is hydro, but isn't probably the kind of hydro you're talking about.

What extras are you talking about? Nutrional value + vitamins?

Agave Nectar is also a good source of calcium, iron, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, vitamins B, C, D, E, zinc, selenium and chromium
