Reverse Osmosis System
    #468865 - 08/28/10 09:53 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I'm in the market for a RO system.  I'm a renter so this needs to be a system that's easy to remove/install and won't require permanent damage to the house or plumbing.  I really know jack shit about RO systems (doing a bunch of research right now) so any help or advice would be appreciated.

Anyone have any type of recommendations?  I've been having a lot of issues with my water lately and really need a solution as I'm starting to get some sulfur smell in my drinking water.

hey man, i use a lil ro system that i picked up at the fish store used for 60 bucks, new 180. Its got three different filters which are connected to each other with tubes, and then theres another runoff filter thing at the top. It has a 3 foot long hose that comes off that just screws right into the hose outlet on the wall, it also has an adapter so i can screw it into my faucet inside, but it is much slower. i have found though, that with the price i paid for the system, plus the amount of water it takes to make ro water, that it would have been cheaper to just get the water at my fish store fore 30 cents a gallon.
 oh well.

The reason it costs alot to use, is it takes like 20 gallons just to make 1 five gallon bucket. The runoff hose just keeps flowin, and the ro water just kinda drip drip drips out.

Yah, I think I'm just going to use the brita fridge thing I have.  It's fairly large I just wanted to try and avoid buying lots of cartridges.  I really haven't been able to find anything worthwhile in my search for an RO system in my price range.

Can the run off water be reused?

Googled ro . Looks to be a slow system(filters). Looked at a few systems but nome of them mention run off.

you can rent an RO system from companies like Rayne. we have one from them, $15 a year and free filter replaces up to twice a year. the filters are what's expensive, so the smart way to go about it is to rent; that is if you get soft water tanks from them as well - it's like a bundle type thing. soft water and a 3 gallon tank (i think they have 5gal ones as well) of nice filtered water under my sink that comes out of this shiny little faucet. extremely easy to install and remove as far as i know ... the fucking Rayne people do it for you for fuck's sake. did i mention free installation? at least, it was free when we started renting ours like 13 years ago.

without coupling it with a soft water tank, it may be a little closer to 20$ a month, but still 2 free filter replacements a year - every 6 months they will come out and do it for you. however, i'm not sure if Rayne is a strictly California thing or not. i'm sure there are other companies out there with the same sorts of deals and stuff though.

either way, it's still cheaper to rent than to buy since the filters are so pricey, especially the membrane filter which really only needs to be replaced about once a year, if that, but that shit adds up.

Wow, that's pretty cool!

I've had a RO system for ages, but the filters are fucking expensive.  Gotta shovel out $53 for my membrane (recommended 1 change / yr) plus 2 x $37 for the dual filter replacement (recommended 2 swaps / yr).  That's $127 yr.  Never knew about there being any excess overflow on these sorts of systems, though I suppose that would help explain my high water bill, notwithstanding freaking hot dry temp's that require regular garden watering.

Since I don't need the soft water service, I'm not sure $20/mo ($240/yr) is worth not having to change the filters myself.  With the soft water though, sounds like cha ching! :tongue2:

well, i think it's more like 17.95$ at most; which is only a few dollars cheaper than what you're already paying so ... meh. i'd have to talk to my mom about the specifics.

and yes, those membranes are expensive as shit. but as an RO renter i get 1 free replacement for them a year, and the other filters get changed every 6 months. coupled with soft water - well, it's very nice, very nice indeed.

Problem is I rent, so if using one of those systems means I have to modify the sink in any permanent fashion it's a no go.  Plus the area underneath my sink is cramped enough as it is, trying to fit in a 3-5 gallon tank, plus the filters, plus all the kitchen cleaning supplies we have would be a nightmare lol.

Although it looks like Rayne is not limited to just California.  Interesting service, but I think at this stage a brita would do the job of removing most of the crap from my water.

Why not just run it directly from your faucet (with just a temporary hook-up you can remove when done) into something like a garbage can, or larger, and just use the water when needed?

it does require sink modification.

we rent our house as well, but our landlords were cool with it.

i should take a picture of what the cabinets under my sink look like for you. it's pretty fuckin' crammed, but my sink is also possibly bigger than yours.

Heh i'd say so without having to see it.  My house is 900 sq ft total garage included, my kitchen area is part of the living area so things are really compact

I disagree completely.  You have so many options in various connectors, and adapters, that you should be able to connect it directly to the faucet without making any permanent changes.

I'm much better off using a Brita filter at this point then an RO system.

I was reading that a Brita filter isn't comparable to an RO system. Apparently the Brita removes odors and taste via charcoal, whereas the RO does the same with charcoal and then has a filter membrane to remove sediment or to lower the ppm significantly.

I'd use a Brita for my drinking water.

http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-make-a-still/

I got a better idea for you. Build a cheap still and make your own distilled water. Cheapest pure water in the world.

Double distill the water and just make sure you use micros and shit so there are trace elements in the water. What effect does distilled water have on plants?
