fixing the ph in hempy buckets
    #430804 - 06/10/10 02:10 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

I have a smaller batch of plants in my grow and there bottom leaves are beginning to turn yellow.. I also noticed on two of my bigger plants the leaves are starting to turn slightly inward. from pics and research It appears there is some salt build up in my containers. I tested the run off solution and its pretty low at about 7.5 How do you guys recommend I correct this problem? just flush with ph balanced water?

Runoff ph is 7.5? if so that way too high.

I highly doubt you have salt build up enough to cause you any problems, they've only been going a few weeks.

Your probably seeing problems with pH issues as opposed to toxic salt build up.  What was the pH of the water you were putting into your bucket??  If it was in the 6 are and your run off is at 7.5 then the pH of your medium is probably more like 8.5-9.

I would flush with h20 that's a balance of 5.5 or so.  Remember to do 3 times the amount of water to substrate.

ya hawk. Been feeding at about 6, the larger two I have have been feeding 1220ppm as of last week. I think your probably right about the ph got me a little concerned. Is that something that would cause the bottom leaves to turn yellow?

How much light are the bottom leaves receiving??  It's pretty normal for the lower growth to turn yellow and die off as the plants mature, and the leaves on the lower portions don't receive enough light to be of use.  So the plant will remove nutrients from them and then let them go.

What size containers are you in now? If the plants roots get a little cramped it can cause lower leaves to yellow too.

I'm pretty sure Hawk nailed it, once your plants start filling in, the lower parts don't get much light, especially when you have a canopy created by a few or more plants. I've been removing lots of dead leaves from the bottom lately as my canopy is so thick.

they were in cups about a month I just transplanted about 2 days ago. the containers i transplanted into are two route 44 cups from sonic and two 2liter bottles that had coke in them. all the pineapple expresses that is.. I keep jumping between plants.. those are the ones with the yellow leaves.

My substrate in my hempys tends to be a little bit alkaline too. What I do is, during feeding, I collect the run off for each plant and then re-adjust the run off, and re feed the plants the run off. I repeat this, until the substrate has a PH of about 5.8 or so. This way, you don't waste as much water and you can really get the whole medium nice and moist with like half the buckets volume in nutrient solution.

Plants are doing well:

That just sounds like a bad idea.

The only thing I could think is that he would think it is a danger of over watering. I don't see anything wrong with doing it like that. Sounds just like any other hydroponic recirculating system.

I was thinking along the lines of what I thought this thread was about, which was flushing to fix ph issues. Re-using nutrient run off in hempy is not a bad idea when feeding; trying to be cheap/lazy/whatever and reuse run off when you're trying to flush would be a bad idea.

Good point. The reason I re-correct the run off is to fix the PH of the medium - also because water is very hard to get into the area I grow in.
