Two Plants, One Pot
    #430520 - 06/09/10 07:29 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

I was going to grow California's state plant number limit on my 4-acre walnut ranch, but things came up thats disallowed me to. So instaed I saved 2 of my clones; one fairly bushy (Gangster Purp [OG Kush x Mendo Purps]) and a skinny (Haze x Green Crack) and moved the outside in their 3 gal. pots.

Recently I transplated both plants into one 65 gal. Smart Pot growbag. It took two bags of soil just to fill it 1/2 to 2/3 full; is that enough or should I full it the rest of the way up?

Also I forgot to add a little steer manure. Usually I add a layer to the bottom; should I dump out the Smart Pot to add the steer manure or can I just add a layer to the the top of it and kinda till it in?

Something with capacity like that will support two plants just fine. I would look into getting some nutrients designed for your application rather than the manure.

What kinda soil are you working with?

The soil I got is kind of a generic brand for  Black Gold, if you will. I still plan on feeding it every once in a while, the steer manure as the bottom layer was a trick I leaned from my friend. His reasoning was that when the roots hit the manure it gives the plant a big burst.

Well anyway I didn't want to take those plants  out again after having just transplanted them, so I added some of the steer manure to the top and mixed it in well. Eh, we'll see what happens.

But my question remains: is a 65  gal. pot 2/3 of the way full, full enough? Thanks.

Yes, 40 some gallons of soil is gonna be plenty for your two plants.

But if it's out doors the more the better I say.  If you can fill it up do it.  The larger the bigger the yield.

I will agree with you, bigger is usually better. If its not a problem for him to pick up the soil and toss it in, go for it. It certainly won't hurt.

Lets not mislead him though, filling up the rest of the container is not gonna increase his yield. It's June and they just went out, they will probably have a tough time filling up 40 gallons of soil with rootmass.

I tilled in about an inch of steer manure, if I add much more soil or manure, it's going to start burying the bottom leaves of the plants. I know a pic would be helpful here,  but it's dark again; I'll get one ASAP.

Should I just fill it up even if it buries some leaves? It's not good to pull them up because I just transplanted them and I don't  want to stress them?

Anyway, any help/advice is greatly appreciated.

That's what I meant by that post.  For some reason I left out the larger your root mass.  Oops...:vaped:

Well I could fill it the rest of the way, but that would mean temporarily uprooting 2 recently transplanted plants or else burying them 1/3 of the way up by just adding more soil to the top.

Is it worth it?

If they are really really new transplants then the root ball should still be in tact. So you would be able to pull them out without even messing with the roots that much. But I would NOT fill up with more soil without taking the plants out first. Going too deep you will cause the stem to rot. So if your going to do it, do it by transplant not by filling up with soil past the nodes.

There it is; is there enough soil there?

65 Gallon Smart Pot?

God I need to get me some of those, if the native soil wasn't so damn amazing where I lived I would be using those.  Most of our holes are 30-40 gallons and it seems to be enough, but like everyone says, the more rootspace the more you are going to yield, pure and simple.

Look at all the guys using 200-300 gallon smart pots on IC Mag, some of them are getting 10lbs per plant... The 100-150 gallon hole we prepped for ONE plant should be impressive this year... I can't fucking wait for 4 months to go by.  :ganja:

The plants are basically just for novelty; this is my first grow and it's just kind of an experiment, I have plenty of other sources for weed. I'm also kind of a lazy guy lol.

So with that in mind let me rephrase: Is it worth it to uproot those plants I just transplanted a few days ago just to add another maybe 15 gal. of soil? Will it really increase the yield that much that it's stupid not to add the soil?

Thanks everyone.

PS Sorry, old cam that never gets used lol.
