Hydrotron +Hempy Bucket

I live out in the boondocks 3 1/2hours from any place that sells perlit but happen to have a friend who has a surplus of hydrotron expanded clay i was wondering if it could be used instead of perlit in a hempy bucket set up and if anybody had tried this?

Hydroton and any volcanic rock should work just fine.

Some guys I think use Coco and Hydroton as an alternative to Perlite/Verm. Though, from what I understand the perlite/verm hempy method is really the only good one.

hydroton is better suited to automatic watering methods like ebb and flow or drip systems, but I would guess that you'll probably be fine

If your able to water a few times a day then you'll be fine. Now if you happen to have a life then no. :happyweed:

Yah, I have to agree with magash here.  Why not just order some perlite?

Hempy Buckets were designed to be a simple thing. Why would you try and complicate things.

Magesh,  is this because you think that hydroton will fail to wick the water and nutrients, or because you think it will fail to wick enough?

The reason I ask is that I grow some orchids, and know people who have grown tomatoes, basil, sundews and various other plants, in a similar, passive set-up.  But instead of using the P/V mixture, hydroton or volcanic rock is used

Admittedly the only benefit i can see from using a LECA is the lack of need to buy (availability, not cost) and dump large amounts of material.  But it's a concern for some
