Is it really necessary to simmer for 4+ hours?
    #332783 - 12/17/09 02:44 PM (6 years, 11 months ago)

The longest I ever simmer for is 75 minutes and the effects are quite popular.

I usually use between 16-20g of shit bud simmered in a stick of unsalted butter with a 1/4 cup of vegetable oil to make about 18-20 cookies.

Is it also necessary to let the butter sit in the fridge overnight?

The reason I simmer for 4 hours is so that I can use a 1/4 oz of shit weed in a stick of butter to get great effects.  You're using 3 times that amount which seems like a waste if you do have the time for a long simmer.
I simmer with a bunch of water too so that the butter doesn't brown, so I have to let it sit in the fridge overnight so that the butter and water separate.

Simmer means lots of solubility.

I just made some butter last night with an ounce of some shitty shake leaves to 3/4 lb of butter (three sticks) and only simmered for an hour.  Slabbed some on a piece of grape nut bread and I didn't feel like leaving the couch for the next several hours.  Simmering for longer couldn't hurt though I suppose, if you want to get the most thc out of your herbs.

The longer you simmer for the more THC the fat in the butter/oil absorbs.

At the same time you have to be careful not to let the temperature get too high because if it does you'll burn the stuff and lose all potency.

So if you're new to cooking with cannabis, use a double bubbler and only SIMMER (the little, tiny bubbles) for an hour to an hour and a half.

If you've tried it a few times I'd still reccomend a double bubbler, but apparently you should simmer for 3+ hours. This seems like a pain in the ass though because you've got to be present to stir the stuff every 10 or so minutes.

Yea, I wasn't aware that you were supposed to do it for that long.  I would be willing to go through the effort of standing around for 3 hours if it means more potency.  I also wasn't too sure when exactly the butter starts to evaporate, so I was worried that the bubbles meant I was losing thc infused butter.  Good to know that's not the case, but I still wonder at what point you would be able to tell when the butter is evaporating.

The butter is not going to evaporate, the water is.

The best way to do this IMO is to use a crock pot and just leave all day.  I like to start it in the morning and just let it go through the entire day stirring occasionally.  The beauty of a crock pot is that you don't have to attend to it constantly.  It takes care of itself.

I didn't use water, that's why I was worried, I only used butter and mj.  It seemed like adding water was an extra step that would make things more complicated then they had to be if it would work ok without it.

What is the benefit of adding water?  Does it prevent the evaporation of the butter?  Like I said, is it possible for the butter to evaporate somehow if you don't add water?

Forgot about it but this seems like the easiest way I've ever seen.

I use water because it allows you to add more leaf material to the mixture, therefore more potent butter.

I always try to simmer for 4 hours but usually dump it after 3.  If you really powder the weed I doubt it really takes this long.

I over grind it with the plastic Volcano grinder - if you're familiar with it is that powdery enough ya think?

I am not super experienced here, so i dont know if that is enough.  I powder my weed with a coffee grinder.  It becomes dust.  In all honesty, it is probably not too significant a difference in how much you grind your weed.  I bet if you cook ground up weed for 2 hours your end result would have 90+% of the THC that you would get if you cooked powdered weed for 4 hours.  Just experiment and have fun. Edit: you can always re-cook your weed during your next cook.

BTW if you powder you weed, you will not have to squeeze it as much while straining.  I would recommend some sort of synthetic cloth or cheesecloth to strain powdered tree.
