Foxfarm Liquid
    #319085 - 11/20/09 09:51 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

I've got Foxfarm GrowBig and TigerBloom.
does anyone know the pH of both these products?
my tap water pH I know is in the 7.5-8.5 range, if the pH of the foxfarm liquid nutes is [lets say] 5.0, will adding it to my 8pH tap water lower the pH down some? thanks

Tiger Bloom will drop the shit out of your PH, but I don't remember if Grow Big does. Adding a standard dose of Tiger Bloom to 8.0 water might leave you around 2.5...seriously. If you aren't using a PH tester you are playing russian roulette with your crop, even the $8 ones at Home Depot are accurate enough to prevent nute lockout.

i have a pH tester, 1 blue drop in a vial shake it and it instantly turns color, but i cant really test the nutes because they are colored.

You don't need to test the pH of your nutrients.  You only have to test you water after you have added your nutrients to it.

I imagine the problem he is running into is the same as mine.  When you use the fox farms stuff its so dark that it messes up your ability to test with drops and compare color.

I use the Tiger bloom and big bloom, and you cant pull that off well.  I have ph'd the water, then added tiger bloom, and it did not lower it like 2.5 as posted above.  It was still in the range of 6.0-7.0, but there was no way to be sure, because of the cloudiness of the water.

What  I have done is ph the water, then add the nutes and retest.  If the color is still in the apporoximate range, I run with it.  So far, @ 50% the tiger bloom hasnt been a problem.

okay so heres what i just got done doing, i experimented for myself because i doubt anyone was going to answer the questions. i took a 1 gallon jug that used to house spring water, filled it up to the tip of the handle [where i connects to the top of the jug, standard arcadia gallon jug] with the 8.0pH tap water, added the 1 TSP of growbig [as directed] and shook shook shook, the pH was then around 7.0, then i added 1/4 TSP of vinegar as an estimate and shook like hell, and it tested to be somewhere between 6 and 6.5. i made sure to write these numbers down as it is exactly what i need every time i water in veg phase. [using happy frog soil havent tested the run off of that yet though] and im about to test the tigerbloom using the same method.

tigerbloom is sposed to be known for dramatically changing pH, but teaspoon for teaspoon growbig and tigerbloom are about the same, but the dosage for tigerbloom is 2-3, i used 2.5 tsp on my 8.0pH tap same method up top, and the pH came out to 5.0!! so i added 1/4 tsp of baking soda and bam, 6.0 on the dot.

so for those with tap water pH around 8.0, and if you use a gallon jug to water your plants heres the formulas again.

1 gal water, 1 tsp growbig, 1/4 tsp vinegar for veg every water
1 gal water, 2-2.5 tsp tigerbloom, 1/4 tsp baking soda for flower every water

[ps even if you dont use the whole gallon in one watering sesh its still good to go by]

i grew a few years ago and my tap water is all kidns of fucked up. i had to go buy gallons of distilled water, that has a ph of 6.5 i believe it was. damn near perfect.

wouldnt using an electronic pH meter be easiest to test this??

yeah the only hydro store in my entire state had the electronic needle testers on their site but the store only had droplet testers.

the foxfarm liqs are a dark puke green colour, but as i posted above, use the dose in a gallon and the water is mostly clear and clear enough to read pH.

oh and i used to buy the spring water for my plants, 89 cents a gallon, but up until today i had no idea that spring water is also around 8.0 or higher, scale goes from red to greenish blue and spring was fucking blueeee past 8.0

Well I was assuming that you were mixing up at least a gallon at a time.  My bad for assuming.  I have never mixed up anything under a gallon, so it didn't really occur to me that you would be using such small volumes of h2o.

just a small closet grow, plants don't get much higher than 4' and at that size only 4 plants would fit also at that point i am using more than a gallon lol but since using a gallon would be more transparent in testing  (and its going by the dosage [1tsp/gal]) it seemed easiest to test.

considering it takes a very small amount of vinegar to dramatically change the pH [1 capfull in a plain gallon that measured 8.0, then read 5.0] it would be hard to measure out a small amount of vinegar using anything less than a gallon.

Yeah, i mix it up in gallon containers too, to make it easier, but I still find it a little difficult to see after words.  I would buy a ph meter, but no one around me has one, and I havent found one cheap enough that I can afford yet.  Sucks being on disability.

hey ASE, were you using the same products as me [foxfarm soil+liquid nutes]? and did you use a pH tester if so what was the pH after mixing and the pH of the runoff?

Hey man, I used a ph drip test setup ( where you match the color ).  Before nutes or any adjustments I came up at 8.5. The first time I had already PHd some water for plain watering, so I added nutes to it.  The water was cloudy enough then that I wasnt really 100% sure of what I was seeing.  That feeding was @ 50%(the foxfarm feeding schedule that I got from the store, not whats on the bottle.  I think it called for 1 tbsp of one and two teaspoons of the other maybe, I will have to look).  I ended up making another one of nutes in water @ 50% and still came up at near 8.0, and had to use ph down to get to the right spot. Now what I have been doing is PH'ing the water and then adding nutes and testing it again after.  As near as I can tell I am still within the 6.0-7.0 range.  Its hard to get any more accurate when using a ph test kit like that.  I am going to measure my runoff next time, and will let you know about that.
