Soil and nutrient advice.
    #304362 - 10/26/09 10:41 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

So, I'm gonna repot my sproutlings...

I'd like a couple recipes or advice using the materials I've got.

I have,

Verm
perlite
Coco coir
cheap potting soil .1/.05/.05
Miracle grow all purpose 24/8/16
Shultz cactus juice 2/7/7
osmocote smart release 19/6/12 (granules)
Lime (granules)
horticultural charcoal?

and I just bought

Sphagnum peat
Super thrive
and shultz 10-15-10

Azyle00 recommends a 60/40 Peat/perlite mix with some additives...
I'll probably go with that unless anyone else has any other ideas.

Should I mix in any fertilizers and/or the superthrive with my soil mix first thing? Or just wet it, repot, and fertilize with the next watering?

Thanks guys

Recommend that you read this over as well if you have not, lots of useful information about soil mediums and also additional recipes that you may or may not learn or borrow from:

http://www.growery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/125037

If you are using some organic stuff, you can add a bit to the soil when you mix it, I add bonemeal, bloodmeal, like a tablespoon or two per wheelbarrow batch, it will do its thing and help provide for the plants once they need it.  I also add 1/8th dose of fish emulsion into the water I use to moisten the mix in the wheelbarrow.  Minor bits of organics to get the herd going, but not a lot.  Then a cup of worm castings, cup of dolomite lime for the PH.  As far as chemical nutes, fertilizers any of that standard stuff...not a bit.  They do not need it early on at all.

For everything I just make sure I don't get carried away adding anything because I feel it is far better to have had too little and correct that error than to have added too much of something and have to reverse.

Should go all organic in soil though.  Works well with peat/perlite and is perhaps one of the easier ways to have the plants grow happy and not have to mess around with a lot of stuff...really self regulates so much except watering.

On the other hand, my brother swears that a bag of triple mix is all you need to grow great bud

Those are all really complex recipes...

Will I be halfassing it or otherwise screwed if I just use what I've got?  I'm not concerned about organic at this time, so can I substitute some of the meals and whatnot with some fertilizer at 1/2 strength or something?

I'm gonna make this batch in just a few minutes, so I really appreciate the quick response..

Would it benefit me at all to use coir and peat?

Don't add fertilizers.

Mix 60% Peat, 35% Perlite, 5% soil, enough moisture to "moisten" the mix, not drown it, then mix it up really really good.  Add some verm if you want as well.

Fill containers up full, of course these containers have drainage holes

Now water them fairly good to make sure that the soil settles decent and you are sure all the soil is wet, no dry patches, no air pockets etc.

Let them drain off and settle for a bit.

Make a hole.

Plant sprouts.

Do not water again until they are almost bone dry.

Water.

Do not water again until they are almost bone dry.

Water.

Do not water again until they are almost bone dry.  Begin Feeding with half what you think you should feed them with.  Hopefully, you have figured out what direction of feeding you want to go by this point.  This might take 2-3 weeks.

Hope this helps somewhat.  Only deviate from this plan if you detect a problem.  The plant will tell you when it is not happy.

Thanks for the info man... you're like, my official grow buddy/mentor around here... DO you use all the teas and stuff too then, being all organic?

Ever use the method of watering like, dipping it underwater "bath" style?

I'm going to go make up a batch right now, thanks again

If you are using tap water it should be allowed to sit for 24 hours before you do all this.  Chlorine needs to evaporate.  It is not 100% needed, but it can be bad for the plants depending on your tap water.

I will use tea for flowering to feed.  But I can't be bothered in Veg, Fish Emulsion 5-1-1 and the Blood/Bone/Worm Castings creates all the soil action I need for it.

A bottle of Fish Emulsion 5-1-1 is about $10...I think Home Depot carries it, and you mix so little into the water and you can get away with just that alone for the veg period, but I believe in the blood/bone/worm castings as a good additive to it all as well.

In organics, the microbes use the peat moss and other components in that mix as feed and excrete the nutes your plants want and add to humus in that medium...which helps regulate PH.  Also the herd is known to love the areas around roots as a congregration area, I think the roots are helping in the creation of the matter they want to eat, then microbes are excreting the nutes near the roots.

Also you can just use worm castings as your fuel in that soil, when you feed, just mix them into the top inch of the soil.  It will take care of itself.

You also will not Nute burn your plants going full organics, another bonus.

Oh and the tea of choice for me that is for flowering, Bat guano in water, bubbled for 24 hours into a tea.

Set up a grow journal and take some pics and post them as you grow and do this project so we can play along

And because I know you will be interested in learning more after you repot your plants, here are some links that will help you understand the various things I use and the science that goes long with it:
