Pistils tell NOTHING about the plant.. unless you know that plant and know when its TRICOMES are ready..

Get a 60x 100x scope and study like hell on tricome's and look at them every other day until you understand it like hell :smile:

Genetics can play a role in how thick they are.. as well as root system.. over or under fed..

Not enough light.. to solve this get HPS and mylar with a nice reflector if you know you have quality genetics that is

As noted, but I think 30x loupe is adequate for detecting the general trichome landscape on a plant. While I'm sure 100x would be totally sweet, it's not necessary to determine a good time to start thinking about harvesting your plant.
