Max wattage for wall outlet?
    #212727 - 04/06/09 11:49 PM (15 years, 15 days ago)

Hey, just wondering what the max would be. I want to run 6 46w CFLS and 2 pc fans. I figure that's roughly 300 watts, which I think is fine, but just want to make sure.

Depends where you are...Example though(In the states):

Say you have a 30 amp fuse...120v X 30 amps = 3600 watts. It puts out more than you will use. Your computer uses more than that probably.

Most circuits in a house though are only 15amp and of that, you really shouldn't exceed 3/4 of the rated amperage. You should be fine with those CFL's though. Be safe!

Thanks, guys. So....15amp would be roughly 1200 watts? Or ~1000 'cause it's 110, right? So, if its 1k, 300 is a third of that, which should be fine. Thanks again.

 where did you get 15 times 110 equaling 1000? It's 1650W, and 3/4 of that (not sure where you got 1/3rd either.....) would be 1237.5W

Its also important to figure out how many outlets are on a single circuit. This can be problematic with older homes. I kept blowing fuses from hooking up 3 space heaters in 3 different rooms. Cause- same circuit.

I meant to say 1800 watts based on 120 x 15 instead of 120 x 30...and if I'm using 300 watts or so that would be 1/6 of 1800 available, right? So it wouldn't be using 3/4, which is all I should care about, right?

You are fine using that I feel comfortable telling you that. Again...Questions that arise for me are always:

1.) How old is your house
2.) What amp fuse are you using
3.) Has your plug been replaced

Personally I completely rewired all of the wiring for my grow room. My house burning down would have been bad enough but then it would have led the police to a nice grow op.

Be safe like DR said.
