Observe the purple on the cap no opium poppy has purple like that and the little green hat thingy looks different.

I have seen a lot of poppys and those aren't good.

I cant believe you are saying you have never seen that "purple" stuff on the pods before. im pretty sure that IS OPIUM left over on the pod from when the petals and sheath fell off, i see that on almost every pod when i have been around them growing. I have seen many many somni's that look like this. Plus there are many regional cultivars that do not resemble the classic somniferum a whole lot but DO CONTAIN OPIATE ALKALOIDS.
