Smart Kids Are More Likely to Become Drunks
    #137169 -

Quote:
Higher IQ scores at age 10 may be associated with alcohol-related problems in adulthood.

Public health experts from the University of Glasgow were able to obtain the childhood mental ability scores of over 8,000 men and women in their 30s, and found -- much to their surprise -- the higher IQ, the higher the likelihood of developing a drinking problem. The correlation existed even after factoring out socioeconomic status, and was stronger in women than it was in men.

The researchers declared the results were "unexpected" and feel the need for "further examination."

We suspect a lot of boozers are hoping these findings hold up, as their perceived intellects would be a great reason to party.

I'm going to sound like a pretentious asshole but I'm sure a lot of your can relate.

I think intelligent people (analytical, logical, smart) have things in life a lot tougher.

It's easier to be dumb. To not question shit and go with the sheep.

Thing are the way they are now because dumb people are altogether too happy to let shit keep marching on. People who want to make a difference and improve things can't because they have to not only be smart enough to come up with the genius idea. They have to be smart enough to get the dumb people to like the smart idea.

Dumb people by nature are opposed to change and things they don't understand. And are poor at conceptualizing how something might work.

This causes the intelligent people to become very frustrated and drinking is a pretty easy and efficient way to deal with shit.

Bad long term plan but it's the result of overthrowing things and becoming dissatisfied.

It's like actors/comics and heroin. I can't speak for sure but I'd imagine they have a more sensitive emotive and social intelligence that makes them feel out of place. Opiates would do a good job at numbing that.

Anyways I've typed enough

That really is a good point. I have had similar discussions with my friends and have come to the same conclusion.

I guess the old adage that "Ignorance is bliss" is a little too true.

My roommate is also very smart, and he's been drunk every day for the last 3 months.

I guess take your pick on that one

If not, then how is a 30 year old considered a pedophile for doing the same thing?
I think y'all need to look up the definition for pedophile.

Alright time for my own personal opinion on the article:

a) It isn't necessarily "smart" people who become alcoholics, it is an entire "type of personality". An "addictive, over critical, controlling" type of personalities that are more susceptible to alcoholism. As for tying that in with "smart people", there is a certain type of smart person who possess those qualities.
b) I am smart and was an intelligent child, as was many of my friends, and not only are they not heavy drinkers, but I rarely drink.

I think this is more related to correlation not causation.  I doubt the article is taking much into account all the individuals who are not intelligent and are drunks and all the intelligent individuals who do not drink.

Like anna said it's more than likely a personality trait rather than related to intelligence specifically.

you know what i did in english class? I came to class stoned out of my mind every day, i chugged vodka in the back of class, i put dead fish in the ceiling tiles. i put a gallon of old milk and orange juice in the file cabinet before winter vacation. i brought snakes in a tied up sweater and let them loose during class. i didnt go to school to learn, i went because i had to. i didnt care, and i didn't fucking listen to that stupid bitch. and i still don't fucking care. i tore the pages out of her books and burned them, and threw away all the books in the class, two books per day.  :twobooks:

I had incredibly high test scores when I was in school, and I did develop a bad drinking problem around age 16.

As did I however I am till this day not much of a drinker.  I prefer my ganja and shrooms.

Also perhaps an explanation for this is many intelligent individuals are introverts and alcohol breaks down the social barriers allowing the individual to communicate more freely.  This behavior in itself is self reinforcing thus increasing the likely hood of addiction later.

I think intelligent people often take drugs because intelligence seems to have a direct correlation with depression.

Drugs in general but especially drinking and opiates, drugs that slow down or hinder brain function/ melt away anxiety.
A few examples are Hemmingway and Poe just to name a few.
All of my friends that I thought were very intelligent as a child grew up to be alchohlics or herion addicts, most at an early age, including myself.
Thats not to say that retards dont start drinking or doing opiates by any means.

That also is a good point, but it can also be tied to what was said earlier.

It is so much easier to be dumb and live life as one of the crowd, but thinking for yourself is bound to cause the realization of how flawed life/the world/society really is. The frustration of being a single being and having little power to influence the rest of the world is an easy formula for depression.

:wow:

all kinds of these posts are people who think they are smart and therefore this study applies to them.

all kinds of posts read like this "im smart but i am/am not an alcoholic"

and it also seems like a lot of people are trying to justify there drug use with the fact that they are smart and it happens

just observing
