planting strait in the pot
    #130208 - 10/08/08 01:10 AM (15 years, 5 months ago)

usually when i grow outside i plant strait in the soil,no transplanting at all,the few times i grew indoors i did the same with no problems(not great grows, but not bad).
can you please tell me whats the point of starting with a small medium and moving it later on.

thanks

PS- i have 99% success with planting strait in the soil

I have heard that first the roots take over the soils then produce foliage So you start them out in smaller containers But you can grow in shot I guess

Are you talking about planting straight into the final pot size? One good reason to start with smaller sizes that are proportional to the size of the seedling and then continue to transplant up is because it can possibly be difficult to give the plant the right amount of water and nutrients if the pot size is much bigger. Of course, as long as you know what you're doing, this shouldn't be a problem.

The other reason though has to do with root development. I need to read up on this more, as I don't remember it too specifically, but if you start out with a big pot, the plant will continue to focus first on growing out the taproot and these lateral roots, when this kind of growth would be restricted by smaller pot size. Essentially, the benefit from using a smaller pot size and waiting for it to fully "colonize" the pot is that you're ensuring as much of that surface area as possible is already completely filled with roots, before giving it more, and I think this is a more effective way of getting more roots based on the way the plant grows them (basically, it grows more roots in a smaller amount of time). More of the right kind of roots, of course, means the plant is more capable of maturing faster and yielding more.

Anyways, I'm sure starting off with the full pot size can work well, but a series of transplants up to that final pot size might work better. Not sure though, that's just my understanding based on what I've read. :shrug2:

There is no problem to planting in the final pot. Have done it many times.

Yeah but we've seen your "final pots": 60 dixie cups full of buds.

Ha, one cup, one bud. I am suck with soil, If I were to put anything in the final pot, I would be pretty much guaranteed to over-water it. But if you can do it, more power to you (and less mess).

ok my man im about to start my first grow, indoors. now ive been reading and reading and reading, i gotta say that there is just to much info out there to get a good idea on were to start. now i like how u did the dixie cup grow, all ur plants stayed small but yet had hella buds all over them... now my question is how can i achieve similar results with the small plants but the nice out come if u will like u did. also did u use just straight soil or did u use other ingredients and were they clones/cuttings or straight from the seed.. your feed back will be my new found knowledge, thnx for reading

The key to keeping them small is to flower the cuttings as soon as they are rooted. In other words no veg time.

The soil was just Fox Farm Ocean Forest. Has all the guano and ingredients added already. The strain  was one of mine called Sweet 16. I bred the strain so it wouldn't branch and could be packed together with good results. Here are more pics of her.

The day they are rooted and ready to be transplanted put them under 12/12 light no 18 hrs of light.

Okay, yeah, i read in one of the guides last night about that

that 12/12 will signal flowering

and 18light/dark will signal vegetation

THANKS  and at one foot tall are they ready to be transplanted?
i read that 12inches is the lowest it should grow before flowering?

not sure if that's accurate but that what i read  thanks
