Insulating my area for growing
    #126178 - 09/28/08 11:47 AM (15 years, 5 months ago)

Hey poeples,
I have a growing place in my attic on the side of my bedroom. I put up a pretty sweet false wall on one side back against the far wall.  Two sides are insulated very well, and other main side is only insulated by a wall of Styrofoam a half inch thick with form boards holding it up...  The area is a foot wide, 7 feet long, and an angle going up words, starting at 2 ft to increase up to 6 ft for height. At the 2ft spot, there is a hole 10 by 5 inch big with a fan blowing air in, but not out. This winter season, I’m going to but a small box heater in the area for warmth. My light is over hanging the area.

Should I insulate the other main wall only of Styrofoam or not? And do I need an air exit or will entering air work fine? And are there any extra points I need to do?

You may not need a heater if you have insulation and a powerful light

what kind of lights do you have ? any chance you can get a picture of the are ?

With the fan blowing in, you are going to have a lot of smell to deal with. If you have company over or anything like that it might be a problem.

good point... so my next bet would to be making a cycle of the air going in and out.

it dropped down to 60 today and my area of space was about 70ish with out one main wall insulated.

Is the roof on top/left in the first pic? Is that the wall that isn't insulated? I can't really understand your space from those pics... If the roof wall isn't insulated I would defintly put some in.

Watch out with surrounding the outlet with insulation. Older insulation (and even some new insulation) has a tendency to catch fire... speaking of fire, make sure your wiring can handle the light, fan, and misc other electrical load.

70 isn't a bad temp to start at, but putting some lights in there will raise the temps quite a bit; make sure you have enough ventilation to deal with the heat.

Looking good so far! Keep us posted.

Is the left wall (sloping) in that pic the roof? Does it have insulation?

the roof has no insulation, but most roofs dont. This is a 1960's made house.

Getting the roof insulated would be my number one concern for two reasons. The black shingles you have up there are trapping TONS of heat and will cook that little space. Second reason, LEO can use infrared scopes to detect point heat sources (read: a light) through any non-insulated space. Or if you live in a cold area with some snow, the snow will melt away in only a small spot on your roof which is a huge tip off to anyone looking for it.
