Do You Write?
    #876336 -

How often do you write? I guess I mean with a pen and paper, not just authoring something. How's your handwriting?

I used to write my uncle fairly regularly, had since I was a kid. He always appreciated the old ways of doing things, and he instilled that in me along with a sense of history and going against the norms of the times. I always liked the idea of a "pen pal", it's not a term you often hear thrown around any longer, usually in reference to prison inmates. But it used to be something that was done fairly often.
For something that was such a significant part of human history, it sure has died off fairly rapidly with the rise of all of our technological advances, like a lot of things that used to be...

It started with my aunt, as a kid my mother set me up with my first email address, she and my mother were the few people in my address book. I remember looking forward to getting those emails from her and having fun with all the fonts and colors and editing options on that old desktop. Then somehow it moved off screen and we started writing letters. I feel it was more just her entertaining and humoring a kid, but she always wrote back, and I was always tickled by it. I lost the final letter she wrote to me in the flood waters of Hurricane Harvey. I remember her telling me the chemo made her hands shaky and that she used to have such pretty handwriting. She died not long after, that was in '08.

A while after her passing, I had a project for school in which you had to interview a family member, and I chose my uncle, and I mailed him my questions, and we just never really stopped writing to one another.

It was something to do, and like posting on here, it exercises your mind in a way in which I always found soothing. To put your mind on paper (or screen), the slow pace of extracting your thoughts and ideas and refining it until you feel it will hopefully be comprehended in the way you intended. I feel like I could always write with more significance than I could speak. I have this problem with mush-mouth and struggling to find the right words swiftly enough. I can take my time when I write and not feel so pressured. Its something else I need to work on, I've always been very jealous of eloquent speakers, like Terence McKenna, and Manly P. Hall. "How do they do it!?"

I always respected the effort and attention that it took to sit down and actually write a proper letter. People can check their phone while they speak to you, or brush you off, but to write something of significance, it is your sole focus while you do so.

I remember I got a friend of my uncles contact info when at his funeral, he was a solid guy and we've kept in touch here and there since my uncle died. I lost his number a while back and I heard that he was trying to call me recently.

I thought about calling him, but noticed I also had his address, so I decided to write him a letter instead and mailed him my new phone number. Been at least 5 years since I've written more than a few sentences. It was atrocious, my penmanship was awful. He didn't write back but he did say he really enjoyed the surprise of getting an actual letter when he called me again.

That actually inspired me to work on my handwriting. And then I had the thought that if I was going to put in the effort, it might as well be in cursive. I always wrote in print and sucked at it too, "chicken scratch" as folks say. They quit teaching us cursive in the third grade and dissuaded anyone from using it anymore. It was a new era, and they put us in the computer lab instead. I will say the typing course has come in handy, at least here.
I had actually forgotten a fair bit about how to construct the letters, so I went looking for examples that looked nice, I actually settled on a picture of the Declaration of Independence, funnily enough It was a big help.
When you wanted to rebel against the crown, you did it in cursive!

Past few weeks I've been taking a bit of time in the evening and just writing random words and sentences that pop in my head. Helps wind down the day. I'm actually surprised at how quickly I've progressed. One thing I've noticed is how critical technique and posture are. I guess all those years of not wanting to be at school and having to slog through the mind-numbing class work gave me a subconscious attitude of not giving a damn how my writing came out, just so long as I got it over with ASAP. I developed a bad habit of leaning on the elbow I write with, and gripping my pen entirely too hard, to the point of my hand cramping up, and going entirely too fast. I've had to learn to let my hand flow, let my shoulders down, and just plain ease up!
I still catch myself wanting to do it wrong sometimes.
The self-awareness of all this unnecessary tension has made me realize I do that in a lot of other areas of activity as well, so it's at least been beneficial! It's made me a lot more conscious of my body and movements and the effort I expend into things.

Again, it's been something to do and hopefully I will find another outlet for it in the future. I've been writing quotes here lately and saving them in a composition book. Y'all should give it a shot. You should take a bit of time and write something to someone you care about, let them know you're thinking about 'em.
I actually wrote a few letters to my uncle stoned and that was always fantastic, the cannabis is a huge help and I enjoyed it immensely. Those were some heavy letters, talk about a flow of ideas! I remember he called me once to thank me for one of them. I found out he had kept quite a few of those letters, when the family was going through his belongings...
