I was thinking about putting in some colored sand from a pet store, I don't want to fuck around with making it into a fish tank. Any other ideas besides colored sand/pebbles?

It could be made into a water pipe. You can buy a kit that will turn a mason jar into a water pipe if the top is the same size you could use it on your owl.
If you could seal the top it would make a good display storage stash jar.
Or you could fill it with Vaseline and fuck it. Life is just full of choices.
