are all cfl bulb types effective?
    #761194 - 12/10/14 09:11 AM (9 years, 4 months ago)

In a very enclosed small grow box? Trying to help a friend build his first setup and he came home with a bunch of the bulbs on the bottom row. The regular light bulb shaped ones.

At first I thought he fucked up, but then I read they are indeed cfl. I've never seen anyone use them, nor have I seen them in the store actually.

Didn't find much googling.

CFLs are junk and have no place in a grow.

that's kind of harsh and innacurate.
You won't get the yield or nearly the density as with a more powerful light but...

Will you get some crystal covered, potent buds to smoke using them?
Indeed

If you're just learning the ropes, starting for curiousity, or just really poor,  they're an option.
Picture the t5 units as being generally about twice as bright.

What flourescent lighting is also clearly lacking in is penetration. If you have small plants, or a thin canopy effect, you can get by with them.
Its cheap and easy to control your spectrum.

I have a "contam/neglect" closet. A place I toss problem children and unwanted/discontinued ideas to go die... kind of like the chuck a baby cliff on the 300 movie...
All I used to run in there was a few rows of T8 shop lights. Some of the bud that's come out of that closet has really surprised me.

I'm not saying they're the best, or most logical option but if they're all you have, will they work? hell yes.  Although, even a low wattage hps would be better.

These buds were from the flouro closet. Nice & frosty although they lack density. I'd say the lights had a place in the equation...

Haha yeah I'm not here to argue the practicality of cfl. I have a 400w hps that runs fine in my little tent. I do veg with cfl and never had a problem.

Mine are the corkscrew style though. His is that weird bulb version. I just wasn't sure if that shape worked the same. he's got a bunch of 26 watt ones. I told him I'd ask if he should return em and he corkscrew style ones.

Biggest load of bullshit I've heard imo, for vegging and cuttings cfls are perfect. Philips 80w cfl, 6500k rating & 5300 Lm for something like $10 a globe if you look in the right places you can't go wrong.

What's the kelvin rating?
I'm using 2 -42w 6500k. 2800 lumens each
              3 - 23w 6500k. 1600 lumens each
              2 - 23w 2300k (for balance:shrug:) I don't know if this even matters when they're vegging...

Also using a small space heater for the fan(no heat setting)
I put it on for 30 minute intervals, every 6 hours mainly to toughen up the plant stalks.
Is that enough? The grow area's temp is between 78 and 84F.

Shitty pic, but

Plants are 10 days old.

I'll be installing more 42w as needed(I have to order them on line)
Also some more of the 23's when they get bushy.

I have a 100w HPS for flowering, plus more 2700k CFL bulbs as needed. My grow space is pretty small (2'x3')

:goodluck: . . . :peace:

Kelvin relates to the color. 6500k is better for veg and has a more bluish spectrum.  5000k is closer to daylight and what I like for lighting in the house. 2300k or 3500k? would be more red and more suited for bloom.

I used to use the 25watt ones, but since upgraded to the 60/80watt outdoor security bulbs cut down on so many little ones. nice and cool for veggie , they always seem to boost the green color in the plants.

they are a SOB when you break em tho. that would be my biggest gripe with them.

I've used a lot of low light source's and found the cfl are ok and do give out a lot of light if you get close to 6500k and the highest actual wattage which usually ends up at 24w at Lowe's. They are best on a splitter so you can get 2 bulbs in one area. T5 are actually great for flowering my seeds still to this day and did me great when I was learning. Veg 6500k / flower 2400-3000k and keep them close to the plants cause the canopy penetration is a joke.
