I've been volunteered by my company to go teach a whole bunch of 8th graders science for about 2 hours next week. I've never taught before and need to work on my public speaking, so I guess lecturing on a science topic to the most apathetic age group is a good way to jump in head first. 
I do enjoy developing the lesson plan and associated powerpoints, its pretty fun trying to make boring topics interesting but not cheesy.

It went well, nobody fell asleep and they asked a few questions at the end. I've been down at Hilton Head all week celebrating my birthday and Halloween, tons of fun was had by all

Thats good that you liked it. I hear intermediate can be the biggest handful. I'm actually in school so I can teach high school sciences. At the very least you can say you did something different for your birthday lol.

We discussed the hydrosphere in general, some history regarding the local river system and how it shaped the surrounding communities. Then the teacher asked me to explain where all of the different elements come from in a way they would understand.
Its interesting trying to re-word things you understand into a way that kids can understand.

That it is. It's why Feynman was one of the greatest explainers of our modern era.
Once I'm in my teaching career I really want to try to start a science club, try to teach some topics like the fundamental forces and such in a way to help kids get involved in science fairs. I mean even without explaining the calculus and such maxwells equations are so enlightening to know, I mean only an engineer needs to integrate. If someone sticks to basic shapes it's just a force acting on a basic geometric shapes.
Or going over some of the basic's of euclid's elements. Our education system only wants students to be taught things in a sequential way, even if there is a wide breadth of material they can understand.
I'm glad you found it interesting, and I'm glad the students asked questions at the end. If they had questions it means you explained it well enough you made them curious, and that's the important part.
