Electric question
    #727293 - 04/23/14 05:09 PM (2 years, 7 months ago)

So I have a really old house that I rent. The circuit breaker is small many things run off of one circuit in the house, including where i was going to plug my light into. Now the dryer is gas and plugs into a standard socket, but next to it the large 30 amp 135/250v plug is being unused and its connected to a 30 amp breaker, a nice undisturbed power source for my grow. my question is how can i convert that to a smaller voltage, or is it suitable to plug in my light? i have a grow blu 180x3 LED and im not trying to push my luck. Does anyone know of a converter to downstep the voltage? im assuming my LED doesnt draw 240 v

It sure doesn't  Are there no open slots to just install a new CB and run a dedicated line for your grow?

the house is quite old (late 50's) and the electric is a touchy subject. there are no more punches available in the Circuit breaker. basically the half of the house the grow would be on is all running off of a 20 20 breaker. so much that the breaker pops whenever i run about 12-1500 more watts that my normal house usage of electricity. its an issue. BUT as said, there is a three prong outlet (2 straight bars, 1 L shaped) that has a 30 30 breaker on it, and nothing else. i did see construction grade splitters that may be an option if i can find the proper male end. also i could replace the socket if i was really inclined, but id like to just buy an adapter if possible. im not sure what my question is, but more or less wondering if anyone has had experience with this.

You could just get a normal magnetic ballast and run it on 220.  HID lights are a better way to go anyhow.

Otherwise I don't know how to get around it

I'd agree. Get a 600w or 1000w HPS ballast and light or MH/HPS switchable ballast. Make sure you can run it off of 240v or 220v current. This will actually cut your electricity bill in half for the light. So if you're running a 1000w light on the 240v circuit it will draw the same energy as a 500w light plugged into a 120v circuit!

I would highly recommend taking advantage of your situation and using this 240v outlet to run all your lights and switch to HID lighting.

There is no way to use this plug with anything rated for 120v unless you use a transformer to step down the voltage. So you will not be able to buy any adapters, and if you do use an adapter you'll actually be wasting more electricity.

The great thing about most LEDs is that they run on 240v, plugs right in. Read the sticker on your Grow Blu and you'll see the input voltage is 100-240v. The internal PSU's down step the voltage. When someone tells you HID is better make sure to ask how much actual LED experience they have.

I've got the GrowBlu 240x3 in the back where its more blueish.

Try adding a tablespoon of cooking oil to your bong water to keep it clean. The oil soluble resin stays off the glass.

wow how foolish of me not to even look at the light. i did go to the website and took a look, just never paid too much attention to the light itself. i plugged it in..it worked..then back in the box it went. there is an electrician coming by friday for other electrical problems and im going to ask if he can split that line while hes here. if not i need to find a 30 new 30 amp outlet, its really hard to find an adapter to a 3 prong dryer outlet without paying a shit load of money

would this work?

I dunno I've never actually plugged one into 240 outlet before, just knew it was possible. You'd probably want to talk to the electrician about that sort of thing.

You could very easily waste $700 on the wrong LED, but the GrowBlu is a solid light.
