I need to get my electrical engineer to look over this post.  Because I feel that poster doesn't know what he's talking about.  I will admit that the money saved by going to 220v is just pennies a day, maybe 1 to 4 dollars a month.  This link alone is all wrong, just look at the coverage area for a 400 watt light, they say 4.2 x 4.2 and that is way to big of an area for 400 watts.  http://www.hydroponics.net/learn/hid_lamp_op_cost.asp

Ok, now the lights wether being 220 or 110 a 1000watt light needs it's 1000 watts.

Now back at the meter all the power runs threw it. Wether that power is run threw 1 or 2 wires the power used by the light is the same.

Power from poll goes to meter, then spread out between two wires and comes back together at the light.

Power from poll goes to meter, then from meter to light in one wire then used by the light.

Since the meter doesn't know the difference it just sees the amount of power drawn threw it since the lights run on the exact same power it doesn't see that it's being delivered by 1 or 2 wires it just keeps track of power being use which is exactly the same between the two lights. :wink:

OK, so this ballast I took a part is lying then.  It states at 110v it uses 1.5 Kw per Kw hour, and at 220 it uses 1.0 Kw per Kw hour.  This was a 250 ballast that broke down on me a year ago.

That doesn't make sense. You can only use 1kW per kWH, no more, no less. That's what kW hour means. If you're using one kWH you're using exactly one kW per hour. Any more and you're using more than a kWH and less is less than a kWH. I'm really confused about what they're trying to say there.

Exactly,,,Ohm's law states that when voltage goes up amps go down.

Watts=Volts*amps

So if your using a 1000w lamp at 240v your still pulling the same power that it would be at 120v just less Amps

Example 1000W lamp At 240v=4.166Amp
        1000W lamp at 120v=8.333Amp

The Amps go down but the wattage used stays the same.

Why use 240 then?  You can run more things on a single breaker then with 120v
Along with your units will run cooler.
Also you can use a smaller gauge wire for 220v then you can with 120v
due to the heat not being there.

Alot of people think ow shit 240V I have to beef up the wiring which is quite the opposite.
Like Magash said you are splitting your wire now with 240V.
Which means instead of drawing all your power threw 1 wire its now being pulled threw 2.

240V= 2 hots 1 neutral 1 ground
Or  2 Lines 1 Load and 1 Ground

you guys got it right on the nose

if you run too much equipment on a 120v you could start a fire, 240v is when a heavy power load is required, like ovens
the amount of equipment being used determines how much you draw, not the way you wire it

Yeah I get it now, talked with my buddy, while fishing he got me straighten out on this stuff.  As for the paper in the ballast turns out all it's good for is rewiring the ballast for different voltage such as 120, 240, 330, and even 440.  They put that same sticker in every light they make from 175, to 1000.  Therefore you guys are right.  I went fishing last night so I wasn't able to come back an admit I was wrong.:lol:
