how much pipe dope do you need to use to make your water lines secure? * 1

Hi, and a question of all of the in house plumbers?

I'm doing some diy plumbing and I need to know how much pipe dope I need to buy?  How far can the pros stretch a whole can of pipe dope?

I don't want to spend too much money on pipe dope, and have excess laying around the house, but I don't want to undershoot it, having not enough dope on your pipes is just as bad, if not worse.  I want to be able to run clean water all throughout my house.

If you guys don't know what pipe dope is, or have anything constructive to say in a legitimate thread, then stay out of it.

You basically just want to use enough to make sure the threads are sealed (if it's a non-threaded joint/coupler then you should be using a bonding cement). Usually just a thin layer like 1/8" thick all the way around is sufficient, because as you turn the coupler the dope gets pushed into the gaps and should seal it up nice.
