Seems like this is a large area of debate. Hope this post doesn't start any guff. I have a 400w MH and HPS I was planning to use the MH for veg and HPS for flower. When I plant my seeds when should they go under the MH and on what schedule, and do you use the same rule of thumb with the back of your hand to see how hot the light is? On average how long will the plants veg before introducing to flowering with HPS. I am growing in a small 3x3x4-5' box with circ fan, carbon filter with inline exhaust fan, enclosed reflective hood. I've thumbed through the threads and what I found most was an argument. Thanks alot

Under the MH as soon as they break soil. 18hrs on 6 off.
How long you veg for is up to you and what you want from the plants and what strain your growing let alone wether that strain is Indica or Sativa or a hybrid.

If you have nothing else to start the seeds with your mh will work just fine. An air cooled 400w fixture doesn't throw much heat. I'd keep the light at least 2.5-3ft away from the soil if you're germing your seeds under the light. Just keep an eye on them after they push through the soil so they don't stretch too much on ya.
How long you veg is up to you. Just keep in mind that your plants can stretch 2-3 times it's size once you flip to flower.
