ebay ads

Can't we find a better way to advertise?

I don't like ebay because:

Quote:

eBay typically turns over user information to law enforcement without a subpoena.

(and don't get me started on paypal...)

Now, I know this means information on ebay auctions, not on here... however, why would we want to support a practice such as above? Does the growery turn over user information to law enforcement without a subpoena as well? I hope not, and I hope they do not support this practice in any way (besides already indirectly supporting it through ebay ads).

Did you not see the article about some guy getting arrested for buying Salvia over ebay recently?? funny how someone makes a post about salvia and an ebay ad pops up.

Next point... let's find some better advertisers. Any ideas?

Well it's a little inaccurate to say someone got arrested for buying salvia on eBay. If we're thinking of the same story, the man happened to have some salvia he bought on eBay, but the police were at his house looking for his son who was on probation, and they also found mushrooms and marijuana. The eBay connection is totally tangential.

But it is concerning that they will turn over user information without a subpoena. Just so we're all on the same page the relevant part of their privacy policy reads as follows:

Quote:

We may disclose personal information to respond to legal requirements, enforce our policies, respond to claims that a listing or other content violates the rights of others, or protect anyone's rights, property, or safety. Such information will be disclosed in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

From what I can tell, this is mostly related to anti-fraud activities. If you can find any instance where a person was investigated because they listed an item or won a bid in a legal auction (even for salvia), I would be very interested to hear about it. Not that this excuses eBay, there's still the principle of the matter, but pragmatically speaking I think it's unlikely that anyone on this site would be affected unless they're scamming people.

Another issue is that due to our controversial content, we simply don't have as many options for advertisers as most other sites. We can't get accepted to Google Adsense, Tribal Fusion or any of the other major ad networks, so we kind of have to take what we can get (within reason). At least there's no popups or porn ads, right?

But with that said, we're still evaluating the eBay ads and it's not even clear yet whether they'll generate enough revenue to be worthwhile. A month from now this might all be a non-issue.

Oh and to answer your question, there are in fact (very limited) circumstances in which we might turn over a user's information without a subpoena. Please see the "usage" section of our privacy policy.

Regards,

-Y

I've bought some textbooks and shit for school this year after clicking on shroomery links, so maybe that'll generate some revenue.  I just clicked on "delicious bacon" and then found my books.  Hopefully that'll work.

Ebay are total assholes, as with paypall, but I'm fine with the adds.

An as an fyi, just cuz ebay has a privacy policy doesn't mean much.  They've acknowledged in the past all they need is a fax or something and they forward everything to any popos that ask.  For all I know they still do this.

If this is you, that is the target of such a request, you can't do anything about the ensuing criminal case, as you have no constitutional right to have a third party private actor not disclose your information- even if they violate a contract (privacy policy/ user agreement) in so doing.  While you could try and sue ebay, good luck.

The courts have reasoned its exactly the same as telling someone a secret that you committed a crime and then the person breaks their promise and tells the cops.  Can't do shit about it to stop the prosecution.  Just cuz you have the right to not self-incriminate doesn't mean once someone else has your information their is some constitutional significance to them breaching your confidence.

eBay Shop for: Nitrous Oxide, Salvia, Delicious Bacon

At least it isn't offering me 'popups'.
