hey man,
I'm not an expert grower. In fact I haven't even started growing yet, but I've been doing alot of research. This seems like a cheap and moderately decent DIY carbon filter.

just going to be super poor quality and bad filtration comparatively

No, I don't think it would work well at all. Most carbon filters need to be moving a lot of air to do any good whatsoever, that little thing wouldn't work well.
