I used the 5 gallons from last year's operation to fertilize 25 gallons of soil-less mix (spent MG). Cost nothing. I collected the worms from a backyard compost. Apparently, the red worms are not native but they were there. If you collect your own worms, keep in mind night crawlers and such won't work. They gotta be red worms or the like. If you want to find out if you have them in your yard just bury some vegetable waste and they will come. Let 'em propagate, harvest in the fall, and start your indoor vermicompost. Or buy some worms online if you need to.
In theory, each pound of worms should be able to consume 1/2 pound of material a day, but I haven't seen that. I blend the stuff to make it easier to consume for them.
Currently I'm thinking of expanding a bit. Right now I'm two plastic bins in at about 8-10 gallons. I used newspaper and peat moss as bedding and included an effective amount of starter material from the yard (including other beneficial micro- and macro-organisms of decay). I'm about ready to up the operation x2.
I'd be interested to see if any of you do this and like to learn new ideas. I am pretty much winging it ....
As they say, "good shit!"
