Shading over bulbs?

If I dont have a shade over my bulb, how much will this affect the penetrating power of the bulb? Obviously its not going to penetrate as much but is it significant?

My bulb is a 400w halide tube, growing 1 single plant. Plant is approx 5ft tall maybe a bit bigger.

Well first off, it's called a reflector. And yes it makes a big difference. You lose a lot of light that could be going to the plant.
