Does anyone know of a float valve or anything else to keep a res top off?

Yeah, that's super easy dude. Get 5-10 gallon bucket. I would personally go with a 10 gallon, unless your super attentative and can make sure that it wont go dry.
Then get rubber tubing and connectors to connect the refill bucket to the main resevoir.
Next your going to need a refill mechanism that goes to a toilet. You can obtain one of these at your local home depot or lowes or just order it off the internet. Hydro stores will also carry these.
Attach that to the tubing from your refill bucket and adjust to the desired level. When the water drops in your resevoir it will automatically bring water from the refill bucket into your main holding tank. Obviously the refill bucket needs to be setup above the main resevoir.

Seems overly complicated to me. I prefer the KISS method of doing things. Less chances of parts failing and causing issues with your crop

I'll stick behind you. Overly complex DIY FTW!
-------------------- In order to grow good weed you need to be part carpenter, electrician, plumber, biologist, geneticist, chemist, and very willing to get dirty. I've been working with power tools since I was 8, my dad is an electrical engineer who owned a 280 gal fish tank, and I studied biology with a specialty in genetics. Getting dirty comes naturally. I think my parents inadvertently trained me to be a weed grower. See what you think on my first try.
