wall covering
    #565344 - 06/18/11 08:15 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

going to begin construction of my grow room soon.  was just looking for some input on what may be best to use as a wall covering. would i be better off to use white frp panels, which resist moisture, mildew and are extremely easy to clean. or go with some sort of foil-coated rigid insulation panel. any and all input is greatly appreciated.

Mylar is the standard it works very well, but depending on your size you can get away with just painting your room flat white paint.

I've used aluminum foil and I grew a plant 20 inches tall and had over 1 ounce on it. But mylar or the flat white paint is better option. I think the flat white paint may actually be better because there are no wrinkles in it like there can be with mylar.

Actually flat white paint done properly is better, you get a TINY bit of difference I promise you, and paint is not only cheaper its easier to deal with its always flat so you dont worry about crinkles, and plus some paints have mildew resistant shit.

You can get that black and white poly shit too its cheaper, mylar gets on up there....Paint obviously being the cheapest.

disagreed I've grown with both and I prefer Mylar by far. More reflectivity so my side buds were much better. Cost, mildew resistance, and poorly put up Mylar with crinkles aren't what I'm comparing but merely reflectivity.

You are right there, If you do it correctly then mylar is probably the best, I just always find the flat white paint good for people in small rooms(closets) and fist time growing....You know how difficult mylar can be to get flat. At least it is for me.

I wasn't disagreeing just throwing a few cents in there.

No fucking kidding man.

I had no idea what I was getting into when i started hanging it.

It was so hard to rip it down when I was done growing because of this.

True that....That's a huge thing, at the very least put foil, I always get cardboard boxes for free from wherever and paint them..It works and its cheap.

Reflectix works great though a little expensive. Depending on your setup it works great for keeping the cold or heat in.

About wall coatings, I was thinking of an experiment.

What about using a high gloss plain white ceramic tile on the floors, walls and ceilings of my little grow room (8'Lx2'Wx6'H).  Tile themselves are pretty resilient to chemical cleaners, molds and fungus.  Properly installed are water resistant and easy to clean.  They are fairly cheap at 8 cents for a 6"x6" tile.

Keeping the grout lines tight may keep the light absorption by the grout to a minimum.

My question is, does anyone know how reflective typical home/bath ceramics are in comparison to Mylar or other reflective coatings. Mylar is nearly 98% by one article I've read but installation of it must be perfectly crease free.  Same article states Tin foils are 55% efficient. A gloss white paint has a higher reflective ability compared to flat white paint. but the article didn't list ceramics.

Ceramic tiles are a bit more labour intensive to install but could be potentially a better solution.  In commercial practices, ceramic tiles are used inside of tunnels to reflect lights from cars and other light sources to greater illuminate the rest of the tunnel.  Kitchens and bathrooms use ceramic tiles to waterproof surfaces and sometimes brighten a space.  Although I'm no interior designer, it seems like they might be onto something.  Just wondering if anyone has tested this in the past before I try or repeat someone else's experiment.

Or for theoretical testing... how does one measure the potential reflective ability of each product.  (besides holding up a light and saying yes it reflects) Remember the key word is measure the reflective results.  I'm not a science guy, but I'm getting all scientific and possibly over-thinking this.

Regards,

No sir, this isn't true at all.
To appear gloss means the paint has to take in light to appear shiny.
I prefer the black and white panda flim, easy to clean, easy to hang, and easy on the pocket.
It's said to be 90% reflective.
