I thought that was only if you had to miss work or something, then they compensate you

My dad just throws the paper away that they send us for jury duty.

You don't get paid squat. It's like 20-30 bucks a day + mileage to the courthouse.
If you're unemployed or addicted to meth you might come out ahead, but if you have a decent job you have to leave it temporarily and do jury duty instead.
