Career as a glass blower
    #544785 - 04/09/11 03:27 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

i was checking out the vacancies on an apprenticeship/training website, and i notice a vacancy opening for a trainee glass blower.
now this is a career path where i could really see myself falling in love with the work. but something holding me back is i am currently training to be a plumber, which i enjoy, but its not something i could ever be passionate about.

i would really love to take a chance and go for this, but i dont want to complete the training and find out that there is very little work out there for glass blowers.

i know there are a couple of glass blowers on this site, im just curious whether anyone here has a career doing so.

having a job i love is much more important to me than a big paycheck, but i still want to be able to make enough money to live.

fuck man, decisions. i may just go for it and see how it goes, but not give up on the idea of becoming a plumber. glassblowing would still be an awesome thing to learn even if i cant make a career out of it.

Don't expect it to bring in any money as you learn because it isn't as easy as it looks. It is really fun but can get very repetitive. Once you become good there is money to be made but you still have to sell it. Also take care of your eyes and lungs because you only get 1 set. All that aside I loved blowing glass and am thinking of starting again. I can't do anything too fancy but I do make nice simple spoons, hitters, and pendants.

well its a 1 year apprenticeship, and you get paid while you learn. something like £100 a week, which would suffice while im still living at home.

Do it man, if you enjoy it then try it. Whats the worst that can happen? you get to learn something that not everyone can do and get paid to do it. I would quit my job to do it. Plus its not like its a life time thing, you spend 1 year doin it then if you find you don't like it, move on to something else.

Yeah thats a awesome deal, how many hours do you have to put in? Also do you get to keep what you make? Sounds awesome!

i think its more assisting other workers for the first couple of months, then learn how to do it. but its quite far to travel every day

Who says a dude can't plumb and blow glass at the same time? A lot of people in the states pick it up as a hobby and it for some it slowly turns into a business while others do it just for fun.

The set-up can be pretty expensive, but not a lot of anything is cheap these days.
