Flowering outdoors in spring?
    #531510 - 02/28/11 11:47 AM (13 years, 1 month ago)

I am currently a few weeks into flower. I am growing in a closet, using 6 26w cfls (blue wavelength) and one 125w red cfl. Iwould love to have an hps/mh setup, however it's just impossible at this point...
Okay here's my question. I've googled it and can't come up with a solid answer..
In a few weeks when temps become consistently warm enough, can I put my girls outside at say 6am and bring them in 12 hours later? Or am I better off keeping them under red spectrum even though it's just a cfl?

Putting them in natural sunlight for 12/12 is certainly an option.

As for compared to CFLs, I'm not sure. It seems like the power of the sun is a lot stronger than what indoor lighting could offer, but if you couldn't get full sun for the 12/12, I'm not sure it would be beneficial.

Hmm.

Of course it's happening inside your head.
Why should that mean it isn't real?

Oh I can get full sun for 12hrs, but isn't spring sunlight all blue spectrum? I guess my choice is between much better light all blue spectrum, or weaker light but with red...

I'm pretty sure the sun has full spectrum year round. The only thing that changes is your location in comparison to the sun.

That's what's a bit confusing. In the fall, it's the angle of the earth to the sun that causes a significant increase in the red spec... Any of you scientific types want to clear this up for us? Magash, Maryanne, Doc? Anybody?

Best official sounding voice: After reviewing the thread, the decision in the previous post, stands. The sun is much brighter than your cfl!

As far as spectrum is concerned, the relatively minor shift in spectral characteristics of the light source is going to be much less important than the increased amount of energy received from the sun vs. a cfl.

What you are trying to do has been done for centuries and is called forced flowering and is used by many commercial crop growers around the world to harvest out of season. As long as the temps outside are fine and you are diligent about getting them inside and outside at the same time every day, no oops I'm an hour late moments; it should work out great, just keep your eyes open for signs of stress.

Thanks!! Kinda what I figured, just wanted to make sure.. The reason I'm contemplating this is that I'm flowering a Special Queen, which prolly has 5-6 weeks to go, but I'm also flowering 2 Hazes from seed, and they will prolly need at least 9 more weeks(they just showed sex 2 days ago, been on 12/12 for28 days)...When that time comes I will have my phone alarm set to go off every day at the same time, so hopefully no slips. I have a little out-of-the-way room in the basement that I will have a refrigerator box in. I will put my girls in that for their 12 hrs dark, so no light leaks..It stays kinda chilly down there though, so I'm thinking about putting a heating mat in there with it.. Maybe a co2 setup also.

I know something pretty awesome you could use for a co2 setup if you didn't have anything in mind and you like to get drunk really, really cheap

It's not the angle of the sun that induces a slightly redder tone to the autumn light. It's called the Doppler effect and it's caused by the earth literally moving "away" from the sun. Since blue wavelengths are higher energy and red wavelengths are much lower energy, as the earth moves towards the apoapsis (or aphelion) of the orbit the wavelengths get generally "stretched" slightly and thus shift towards the red tones in the spectrum. It's the same effect as when a car sounds high pitched when it approaches you but sounds low pitched as it drives away.

So in your expert opinion, am I better off using the spring sun for 12/12, or my red cfls?

assuming you can get a perfect 12/12 light cycle with the sun, then outdoors will be 1000X better than CFL's
