Questions about Nutrient pH and pH balancing
    #528485 - 02/18/11 09:21 PM (5 years, 9 months ago)

So the situation is that I have just put 2 female plants into flowering about 2 or 3 weeks ago. I am growing in soil, using 18x 26W CFLs and a 90W LED light and a 45W LED panel for lighting. I am using the Fox Farm line of Nutes, but I do not have a pH meter nor do I have the money for one (poor starving college kid...and no I'm not in a dorm)

Is there anyone out there that can tell me either the pH of Grow Big or Tiger Bloom as measured on a pH meter (undiluted) or if there is even experience with this, how much of what should I add to a solution of 2 teaspoons of tiger bloom in 1 gallon of water to achieve a pH somewhere near safe levels (I believe 6.5 or 6.8 is ideal).

Any other experience or literature on pH balancing without a pH meter would be helpful, and yes I do know that the pH is affected by water pH and its not absolutely consistant every time you mix it and all that jazz. I'm just looking for a ball park estimate so that I don't utterly destroy my plants in the process of trying to feed them, it does not have to be within .1 on the pH scale or anything like that, as I am feeding rather conservatively and I do use big bloom to help break up salt build-up and what not...

Thanks in advance,
agmotes165

What do you mean by this?

Also, you can get pH test drops at Wallmart in the Pool section for like 5 bucks.  they are not the best, but they are better than the method you are about to attempt.

The method you are about to attempt depends on the type of water you are using.

I use distilled water, and use Tiger Bloom.  If I use 2 tsp of Tiger bloom I generally need about 2 1/8 - 2 1/4 tsp of pH up to correct it, but again I don't suggest you do this blind.

not sure if this helps but most drinking water is a ph of about 7.1,7.2,as for the nuts i would ,t no,if there is a hydro shop around mix up some solution in various ratio,s and bring it in and get them to test it for you !

That avearge can vary WIDELY from area to area.  Let alone taking into consideration the mineral content of your local drinking water.

Invest in a 5 dollar pH test kit.  They work pretty damn well for the price of it.  I used em for years with spectacular results.  And don't tell me you can't afford it, I know you can because I've been there.  Hold off on beer or smoke or cigs.  Collect cans if you need to man.

Very important.  WAY to important to just be guessing.

If I meet a person who can correctly guesstimate pH by looking at water and telling me how much to put in, that person will live with me for the rest of my life.

As others have said a simple 5 dollar set of drops or strips is all you need.  Much better then just hoping your pH is where it is supposed to be.
