1400 Watt SCROG, LST, HYDRO, SOIL (Burmese Kush, Afghan Kush, Iranian G13) **UPDATE 01/15/11**
    #505612 - 12/14/10 01:36 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Hey guys I've just started the hobby of growing some medical marijuana a few months ago. My first grow was 4 plants under 1000 watts in soil under a SCROG. I was growing Burmese Kush, Afghan Kush, White Widow, and Iranian G13. I ended up burning the plants with nutrients quite a bit, but I still ended up getting about 8oz when all was said and done. Here are some pics.

I thought the Brumese Kush was the best out of them all. It had a great smell and taste with a powerful high. The white widow didn't produce much as it was sick about the entire time, but she made some pretty fruity tasting buds. The Afghan was also great producing really crystallized buds with a great high. The iranian g13 seemed to be the least potent of the batch but produced the biggest buds out of the lot.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After that grow I decided to try out some hydroponics. I had 6 plants in and got a case of root rot. I was trying to battle that out when I got hit with a bad wind storm that knocked my power out for a couple of days. Needless to say I ended up have to throw them out.
This caused me to have to start over from some plants that I gave to a friend.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So now here I am. I started this grow about 4 weeks ago but I have just been too lazy to post. So I figured I would get off my ass and get something posted.

Because of the power outage last time I did not want to fully depend on the hydro so I am doing some hydro and some soil. I liked how the scrog worked out last time so I wanted to that again, but I also wanted to get my hand in on a little bit of low stress training.

Things this time have been going much better. The plants in the back reservoir had some root rot again and I have no idea why. Res temps have always been about 65. Once I got it again I decided to clean out my res. Refill it with only water mixed with some 35% h202 and let it sit for a few hours. Then I emptied the res and filled it with fresh nutes and added some hygrozyme. It took the plants a few days to respond but boy have they really came a long ways. I was thinking I was going to lose them.

I am currently running the plants under a 1000 watt MH. On Friday they will be going into flower and I will be adding another 400 watt to the mix for a total wattage of 1400 watts HPS. I have been using fox farm nutrients and just started adding bio root to the soil plants.

Please post any comments

Thanks

I thought it would be time for an update.

We are now 4 days into flower and things are looking good. I changed my res' over to flower nutes on saturday and the plants seem to be taking it good.

Here's what all my measurements are looking like

Water PPM: ~200
Res PPM: ~950
PH: 5.8
Res Temp: 66
Room Temp: 77

Here are some pics I took yesterday. They have definitely grown quite a lot since my last pics. Hopefully in another week or so I should begin to see the beginning signs of budding.

Check out the stem on this bitch. It will be interesting to see the size of it by these girls are finished.

And then I have been having a problem that has been popping up here and there. This problem only occurs on new growth and it only happens to like one tip per plant. If you have any idea how to get rid of it that would be appreciated.

I hope you guys enjoy. I will post more pics up in a about a week. Soon the bud porn will be coming.;

~Peace

Well it has been a few days since I last posted. I did a res change on the hydro plants today and pumped my ppms to a little less than 1100. Things are still looking great. Those stems just keep getting fatter. Here are some pics.

I am sure by next friday there should be some nice buds starting to form. I am hoping to get some pretty hefty buds off of the hydro plants, because I have seriously never seen any growth in a plant as in those. Another few weeks and I am going to have to get some clones going for the next batch.

Next grow I am thinking of not using the screen and try to get a perpetual harvest going. Something like 8 plants every few weeks, but I haven't quite made up my mind yet. I am hoping to have some nice yields on this one.

~Peace

I hope everybody's christmas was good. It's been 5 days since my last post so I thought I would post some pics. They have grown quite a lot since the last time I posted. Heck it seem like they grew over night last night quite a lot.

Everything seems to be going good. I do have some leaf tips curling and the two soil plants under the scrog seem to be curling quite a lot. I don't know what the problem could be. I was thinking maybe a PH issue. If you have any ideas let me know.

For some reason all of the soil plants have bigger buds than the hydro plants. The hydro plants are just barely starting to show, but I guess it is still a bit early. 2 weeks flower is not till friday and a lot can happen in 3 days.

Well i am sure you're ready for the pics.

Hey there I thought I would post an update. Things just keep getting better :smile:

We are now on day 20 but the pics below were taken at day 18. I know I am a lazy ass for taking so long to get the pics up.

They are starting to get some decent buds on all of the plants. The two plants in hydro that are doing fantastic look amazing. There are so many hairs on the buds it is ridiculous. I can't wait to see what they look like when fully mature. I also see some crystals on a lot of the plants.

I decided to go ahead and start running some molasses on all of the plants. For some reason I had some major ph fluctuations in my res after adding the molasses and I am not sure if I want to add it again. I was able to get it stable finally, but it was going all over the place.

Friday is res change day again so I will probably take more pics then. Pelase enjoy the porn.

My res's are built into coolers. Each cooler holds 6 gallons of nutrient solution and each has it's own General Hydroponics Dual Diaphragm air pump with 4 cylindrical oxy stones. I even think they could use a little more air and would like to bump it up to 2 pumps per res. Once the root ball has filled the coolers hardly any air bubbles make it to the surface.

To empty the reservoirs I epoxied some 1/2" fittings with a ball valve. Then ran 1/2" tubing to where it was easily attached to another tub. Then I have a mag drive pump in beween the res and the tub that pumps the water out. Before I pump the water out I mix my nutes in another tote. Then pump the water out. Once that is done enough time has passed by to ph my nutes. After phing i just put the pump into the tub with the nutrients and pump those into the reservoirs.

RIght now the biggest pain in the ass is taking my measurments. For the back plant i have to reach down in through the canopy to get the measurements. I am using pens right now but would eventually like to get a nice meter with a remote sensor.

I will take some pics of how it is setup when I take more pics.

Peace

Hey guys sorry it's been a while since I posted anything. Things have been getting busy as school started this week and I am taking Senior Level Electrical and Computer engineering classes so it gets pretty intense.

Yesterday was res change day, but I just didn't have time to do it so it was put off today. While I was doing the res change I went ahead and took some pics for you guys.

The plants are now in week 5 of flower (Day 29). They should be finishing up in a little less than 4 weeks. Things are looking quite snazzy and I am hoping for a real nice yield with a some real good smoke. I know i'll be getting way more this time then I did my last grow. Even my soil plants that I LST'd are doing fantastic and have some good solid bud formation.

I have also got some new plants in the ground about 10 days ago. You can check them out int he pics too. I've been feeding them with GH bioroot and FF big bloom in a mixture of FF Ocean Forest and Happy Frog. Most of the babies are clones of my strains (Iranian G13, Burmese Kush, Afghan Kush), but I also have a couple new seedlings in there too. One is OG Kush and they are looking fantastic and the others are seeds from some really good outdoor bud that a friend of mine grew this past season. I was just seeing how they would do indoors. There is the one in the pics that looks a bit effed up but that was cause I accidently sucked the plant into a vacuum a bit. I use a wet/dry vac to clean out my room and brought the hose a bit too high the other day and sucked some leaves in. But it's recovering.

I also really need to get some new pots and more soil for these new soil plants because they are already bustin out the bottom. I guess the bioroot is working wonders.

Enough with the words enjoy the porn.

Any tips for a first timer wanting to use ScrOG method?

The best tip I can give is just to experiment with your training. The length of time you train is really important. During my first grow, I didn't get the plants under screen until the first day of flowering. I then trained until the stretch was over. This caused quite a few smaller buds. Instead of nice big ones that tower over the screen. So this time I decided to quit the training a bit earlier. Here is what I foudn works best.

Veg your plants and get the screen over them as soon as they are tall enough and start training the plant to cover your whole screen. You will soon notice that the branches other than the main shoot start to really bulk up and grow just as much or more than your main shoot. I do not top at all for this reason. Seems like a waste of a bud site.

You want to veg them until your screen is about 70% full. Once it is that full flip your lights and watch the stretch. Keep the plants trained along the screen for the first week to fill it out the rest of the way. By the end of your first week of flower you should start letting the branches grow above the screen. For the rest of the stretch just try to keep them all the same height the best you can. I am still working on that myself as you can see I have a lot of different heights there.

I also strongly suggest LSTing. It comes in real close to Scroging w/o having to have a big screen in your room where you can move your plants around at all. I only LST the first few weeks of veg. Just as soon plants are tall enough bend them over and tie them down to the edge of your pot. Soon all of your side branch shoots will get horomones to get beefed up. You get the same affect as topping a plant except you don't lose a bud site or the recovery time. Once all the branches are going togther you can untie the main shoot and they will all grow up in sort of a lop sided bush.

This is my first try with it and had mixed results. Some plants turned out really well with 4+ main colas while a few of them only got one main cola still with a bunch of small ones near the bottom. But I am sure practice makes perfect.

Hope that helps
~Peace

Thanks for all that. It helps.
From what reading and researching I have done so far, I think I will want to take your advice and go with LST as opposed to trimming or FIM. It would seem you can get the same or better results without hurting your plants.
I try to look really close at the screen pictures. When you train them with the screen, do you just kinda stick a branch or leaf clusters under there?
I really love your pictures and you log. I did a search on ScrOG and I am glad this one came up.

You're welcome I am glad you enjoy my log and grow.

Yeah it is hard to tell whats going on with the screen cause it is just so dense with leaf, and bud. But what I do is I don't really let the plant come above the screen for long until I flip. Just let it grow for a bit up through the screen then when it is long enough, push it back through the screen and move it to the next hole. It is very simple. I know it looks like it might be difficult but I am sure you will get it once you start trying to do it. I completed a scrog on my first grow so I think anyone with any experience growing should have no problem doing it.

I built that whole room all by my lonesome. My fiance was like 8 months pregnant with our son at the time so she couldn't really help much. She did help me carry some light boards and she held a piece of drywall in place. But the rest was all me.

The room is located in our upstairs bedroom. It was once a pretty large bedroom, about 15 x 25 or so. I got my medical card and needed a place to grow so this was the best available. I went and got the wood and just framed a wall in the room and got a door for it. I worked on building the actual room for what seems like months.

It still has carpet in there unfortunately, but plan to take that out sometime by the summer. My install some ceramic tile in there or something easy to take care of. I was eve thinking of building a slightly elevated floor in there with a drain.

Soon the rest of the bedroom will be turned into my flower room while the current grow room is made into a veg room. I should have plenty of room in the flower room for at least 4KW of lighting. This way I can have 3 sets of soil plants in a perpetual rotation and then have my hydro scrog running doing experimental stuff. I currently have a patient plus myself so I can grow a total of 24 plants. Soon that will be changing though. I have 2-3 more friends/family that will need caregivers soon also. So I will need the room.

If you have any more questions please don't hesitate to ask.

That's great that your wife is supportive of your hobby.

Just one question at this time. What do you mean when you say "I don't let the plant come above the screen until I flip".
It sounds to me like you just train the plants under the screen, but the "flip" I don't understand.

Thanks

He means flip the lights to 12/12 or what ever your preferred time is for flowering.

When you tie down the top of your plant or tuck it under the a net, the tip will naturaly start to grow back towards the light.  Your plant will have a S curve if you let it grow up from that point.

With the ScrOG, you are continually doing this by weaving your grow tips over and under your net or by staying under the net.  In turn, they will always try and grow up.  When your net is 60-80 %, what ever you prefer, you stop training and let them grow up

Yeah muse42 is right. The plant will start to grow up through the screen and the idea of the scrog is to spread that out so you plant takes up a large area. So every time it pops up you just move it to the next hole further away. My screen is a bit large I think they are 4"x4" holes where 2"x2" is supposed to be optimal. But I've decided i like the bigger holes because it is easy to let the plant come up through. I don't have to worry about pulling leaves through a small hole. But if you use larger holes you need something to tie your plants in some spots to get them in the right spot. I bought some stuff from a local grow shop that is like a roll of plastic twist tie. The stuff works great. If one bud is growing higher than the others I can just use that to tie it down a bit.

Just trust me once you start your scrog you will get a hang of it. You will see how the plant grows and it will come naturally. If you can grow healthy plants you can grow scrog real good.
