T5 Veg / 400w HPS Flower ]|[ Chemdawg x Guava and Bubblegum Strains
    #491491 - 10/25/10 03:14 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

Intro:
My friend hooked me up with 3 clones, two Chemdawg x Guava and one Bubblegum. They've taken root now and are vegging pretty nicely under my T5. Today (10/25/10) I just took them out of small pots and put them into some 2gal buckets.

I want to flower out the Bubblegum  as well as one of the Chemdawg x Guavas as soon as possible. I'm going to keep the better Chemdawg x Guava plant as a mother and from then on take clones to flower hydroponically in DWC buckets.

Right now I'm vegging in a closet because I don't like the 2'x4'x5'3" tent I bought, I think it kills my plants although it's not a Hydrohut.  I'm going to give it another chance when it comes flowering time though. I already partitioned the tent into two 2'x2' areas one for veg and flower. I may end up clearing it out to the full 2'x4' to take full advantage of my 400w HPS.

There's still quite a few variables to be sorted out but I'll figure them out as needed.

Lighting:
Vegatative: 90w 2' 4-bulb HydroFarm T5 Flourescent
Flowering: 400w switchable digital MH/HPS with 19" cooltube reflector

Nutrients
All made by Advanced Nutrients

For vegetative:
-Sensi Grow parts A+B
-Vodoo Juice
-B-52

For flowering:
-Sensi Grow parts A+B
-Tarantula
-B-52
-Bud X Factor

UPDATES:

10/25/10:
Today I took the plants out of their small sized pots and put them into 2 gallon buckets with Foxfarm Happy Frog soil.

I've yet to give them any nutrients at all. Until today the soil was an unknown mixture given to me by a friend.

Whole closet:

Right side only:

Ready for nutrients soon?

I'm getting a ppm meter in the mail on Saturday. Once I've got it I'm going to start giving them nutrients. I think that all that burning was due to too much heat! This is a 3'x2' closet with a 4 bulb HO T5 running 24 hours a day. I'm a moron  The temp was constantly at ~83*F

Yeah I went away for a couple days and they grew into the light a little too much..

I also don't know why the edges of the leafs are losing their green color, I've only been giving them tap water.

Drainage? I drilled 8 1/2" holes into the bottom of each 2 gallon pot, dunno if that answers your question.

The initial pH is 6.5-7 and the runoff pH is ~5.

That's the pH of the water. Initial = the pH when it comes out of the tap, runoff = pH of the water that gathers in the tray under the pots after its gone through the soil.

hmmm.... they do look a bit overfed to me.  From what I understand Happy Frog is mostly a soil conditioner or amendment, so it could be that they're just receiving way too much food from that soil. the pH thing you mentioned in your :pm: concerns me a bit though.....

I would try giving them a nice flush to try and stabilize the pH, then count and see how many days it takes for the soil to dry out.  It sounds like you have good drainage in your buckets, but some soils (specifically soil amendments) are designed to retain water like mad, so that could be part of the problem too.

Thanks for popping in Harry, I really appreciate your input. This issue is a total paradox to me; light burn, nutrient burn, zinc/potassium deficiency???

Let me see if a little more detail can shed some light on the issue:

I didn't use happy frog until two days ago (10/15/10). Before the happy frog I had a soil mixture that a friend of a friend made; it did have some ferts in it but I don't know what kinds or how strong they were (I remember it had some little pink pellets in it).

I never really noticed any burn until 10/25/10 when I realized I'd neglected them for 2-3 days and they'd grown into the T5 and got really droopy from lack of water.... So the burns were already around before their roots ever met Happy Frog.

I've sort of already done what you suggest: when I transplanted them into the happy frog (10/25/10) I watered the shit out of them using a brita (as opposed to just the tap) so that maybe 20% of the total water went through the pot. (I can only water 1 pot per day because I only have 1 water tray atm).  Now I'm hoping for some good results. Will those burns on the leafs go away when the problem is rectified or will they remain as scars?

At this point I'm not really sure what to do..?
I will be using Advanced Nutrients, which claim that there is no need to adjust pH of their stuff. I don't know how much to buy into that but I was thinking maybe if I gave it nutrients it could rectify the problem, pure speculation..

Anyway, I'm obviously baffled and concerned for my plants. I just don't know what to do besides wait.

A little update...

12/10/10: First day of flower
[Sorry no picture]

12/13/10: Whole tent

12/22/10:
[Sorry no picture of Chemdawg # 1]
Chemdawg # 2

Bubblegum

12/28/10:
Chemdawg # 2

1/06/11:
Chemdawg # 1: My chemdawg plant numbered 1 for some reason grew out much lighter green colored compared to plant number 2.

Chemdawg # 2: In real life my plant numbered two grew out to a much, much darker green than number 1 for some reason.

Bubblegum: A couple days ago I lent a metal chair against the tent and I think it damaged the main root ball of the Bubblegum. The next day the leafs were extremely droops and over the next couple of days they turned bright yellow. I fed them more voodoo juice and the plant seems to be coming back a little bit. Unfortunately the buds are much more underdeveloped than the chemdawgs.

Ha. I know those updaters who never update

Still need to get mine updated since we are almost at week 8 of flower.

Looking good man. I am about to be using Ocean Forest on my next grow, I love me some Fox Farm soil. I am about to try their Open Sesame, Beastie Bloomz and Cha Ching trio with it too.

Hey I got the pictures from the day before my last post in this thread and pictures of the plants after I trimmed them. and then again of all the stalks hanging to dry..
all the buds curing now but I can give the weights

Chemdawg plant 1: 37.4g
Chemdawg plant 2: 50.9g
Bubblegum: 40.7g

totals ~4.6 oz
so I'm sitting on over a qp to smoke on my own!
I'm trying hard to give the buds a long time to cure but I keep taking it out and popping it in the vape.
I'm still blown away by the odor of the bubblegum.. it tastes kinda like bubblegum too.
