Plant #1
    #49417 - 06/02/08 10:29 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

This is the first plant I started. It is bagseed. I'm not sure if its mids or heads. Some seeds got switched around. I have 3 other sour diesel plants as well. I'll post pictures of them in a second. I was just wondering how the plant looked and if you had any suggestions. I don't know when im supposed to prune it or anything. I just have it on the counter under lights right now. I got everything I needed to build a box with CFL's tonight. It will be built tomorrow. I'll use them until I can get the hps/mh setup I found.

Looks ok, try and keep the light closer, you can have fluros an inch away from the top.

what kinda lights is it under?

it looks like youre stretchin the hell out of it.

with CFL or any flouros for that matter you can have you plants nearly touching the the lights.

if youre using regualr incandescents, STOP and get the cfls on it asap. lower them. and work on getting that plant beefy.

it looks like you have a stick holding it up right now.

you gotta think man, if the stalk is wimpy how will it drink, how will it hold buds, how will it be strong enough for anything....

ull never see a weed in the wild like that. it would snap at the first breeze.

if you can get a light fan in the growroom with it, you might be able to strengthen it a little!

try oyster shell I think it is, it has a lot of calcium, which should strengthen that plant a little bit, good luck!

Soluble silica is what's needed for stronger, thicker stems and it's missing from most nutrients and fertilizers. It's quite cheap and available online or from any hydroponics store.

Soluble silica is very alkaline and should be added to water and PH balanced BEFORE adding nutes.

It doesn't have a stick holding it up. It's decently strong now. The other 3 aren't yet. Those are under two really shitty small flourescent tubes. They will be under cfl's today. I am going to have the lights almost touching the plants. How far is that plant away from flowering?

Ultimately its up to you when you wish to induce flowering, but if you're growing from seed its best to wait until they show maturity, usually around a month of vegetative growth (which can be determined by when the plant's nodes begin alternating). How long has it been growing?

About a month and a half..maybe two months. I've got about 4 sets of alternating nodes.

It won't flower until you reduce the light to 12 hours a day.

I mean when would be the best time to induce it? I figure it's going to get a little bigger after I get this box finished and get the CFL's on it.

Let it get to ten or twelve nodes, it should show preflowers by then. After it shows sex you can tie it down horizontally and flower it so don't worry about it getting too high in the mean time.

the plant in that picture isn't showing alternating nodes though.

What are the alternating nodes? Just where they change direction as it goes up?

look at your plants and notice how the stems of the fan leaves are in perfect alignment? When your plants begin to alternate nodes the nodes won't line up like they are now.

here's a good example, notice at the top of the plant near the main stem you can see the gap between nodes? That's what alternating phyllotaxy looks like, once you see it for the first time you'll never miss it again.

They do this when the plant starts flowering, don't they?

I just got my box built. I broke the saw so I have to wait so i can finish cutting the door out. I have 4 100watt replacement CFL's in there. Each light is about 1600 lumens each. How many should I run until I can get my hps/mh setup?

They do this when they become sexually mature. It can happen in veg as long as you leave them there. It took me about 4-6 weeks until maturity every time i grew from seed. So, if you flower them before they're mature, they'll show sex and alternating nodes in flowering once they're ready.

What's the dimensions of your box? Its usually best to refer to the CFL's by their true wattage and not the incandescent wattage they are replacing, but I'm assuming they are around 20 watts by the lumens they are producing.

23watts, I think. The box is around 4 foot tall and about 2 foot by 2 foot, give or take a few inches.
