transplanting from dixie to 4 gal
    #494134 - 11/01/10 07:21 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

I've got all my clones vegging in dixie cups (hempy), and they're pretty big by now, undoubtedly ready to transplant.  I'd like to put some of them in flower within a week, so it'd be best to just put them in their final container, which is a 4 gallon bucket.  Will a plant this size fill a 4 gallon with roots right at the beginning of flowering?  I don't want to have wasted space if the plant starts focusing mainly on stretching and not root growth, and only colonizes the top of the 4 gal.

How big are your clones right now?  dixie to 4 gal is quite a leap just before flowering if your cuttings are small.

EDIT: Notice you said big, but you should keep in mind a gallon per each vertical foot of growth you want to have.

They are wider and taller than the height of the dixie, maybe by an inch or two.

I think I'm actually going to do 3 gallon buckets, though I'm not sure that makes much of a difference.

So about six to seven inches?  Well rule of thumb for final height of your plants is 3-4 times the size of the plant going in.  Assuming seven inches you're looking at around 21-28 inches.

Course this is just a best guess, that plant was about 4 inches going into flowering.  She's mainly sativa and didn't stop growing up for a long time lol.  Think she's hovering at around 4 ft give or take.

The more I'm thinking about it, the more I'm considering moving away from big buckets and more towards a 1 gallon container SOG.  I'm trying to get to a perpetual system, and I have limited height anyway...

Yeah man, half my garden is down to 2gal containers, and if I do Hempy for another round it will be in all 2gal buckets. Otherwise I'm shooting for an Ebb & Grow / Multiflow bucket style setup, all this handwatering has been kicking my ass, and I'm not even half way through flower.

Yeah, I think I'm going to try a SOG this time, with minimal tying down.  I can easily fit 15 one gallon containers.  I'll probably just aim for 2-4 main colas.
A SOG will totally solve my transplant/height issues too!

Two gal's are all I use, plenty of room for the plant size I like to have in the cabinet.
