Yellowing of leaves
    #467303 - 08/25/10 02:47 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Hi new to this forum etc and I imagine this has been asked a million times but could do with some opinions on the following pictures Thanks!

Colours might not be quite as they are in real life .....

What are the possible causes of the yellowing?  Lack of Nitrogen?  Too much nutes and being burnt?  Ph problem?  All answers would be great and if u need more info to make a guestimate please let me know  :billymaythumbup:  :billymaythumbup:  :billymaythumbup:

If those r lower leafs. it happens.. if your hydro, and u keep ur nutes up tothe right ppm and changed.. then your ph is off.

Hi im using coco coir . Not hydro.

Its not just lower leaves there are some yellowing at the top too not many but a few. Would a pic of the whole grow be useful? Thanks for your response :billymaythumbup:

Hope this helps but its hard to get a good pic

Growing in a soiless medium is a form of hydroponics FYI.

Possible causes for your yellowing.

1.) N Deficiency (yellowing leaves starting from the bottom of the plant, rusty red stems on the fan leaves)
2.) Mg/Fe Deficiency (yellowing leaves starting from the bottom of the plant, leaf margins and leaf yellow while veins stay green)
3.) P Deficiency (yellowing leaves starting from the bottom of the plant, purplish stems on fan leaves, necrosis of leaves can occur)

Judging from your pic I'd lean towards 1 or 2.  Hard to say since to me it shows symptoms of both a N and Mg deficiency.  My advice would be feed with something that's a little higher in N and supplement with a Mg product like CalMag.

Hi thanks for the correction on the Hydro soiless mix thing   This is what I was after :billymaythumbup:

This is not actually my grow its a friends but he is away and i am looking after it for him and i wanted to make it perfect (as close as can be) he is a little less bothered and a bit slack! He has grown a few times and thinks he knows it all

I don't know what nutes he is using as everything is in old fruit juice bottles and i was given basic instructions for feeding etc

I have added some molasses (Jorge Cervantes recommends amongst others) to the nutrient mix to see if this will help them out a little. Will also make sure the PH of the soil and solution is within the recommended ball park as this could mess with the plants ability to obtain Nitrogen etc ( is this correct? )

Are there any ways to add nitrogen to the nute mix that doesn't involve buying a fertilizer?  Eg along the lines of the Molasses idea.

Thanks for all the help :billymaythumbup:

Well the N has to come from somewhere, be it a pre mixed solution like grow big or a compost tea made from bat guano etc  You need to have a source of N somewhere along the line.  Any way to contact your friend and figure out what the hell is in those bottles?

Hello I have been left with my friends babies again and the yellowing has progressed with a added curling at the tips and edges and some quite deep bronzing to.

I am not sure if PK 13-14 has been used yet, any thoughts?

The yellowing of the leaves with the green veins just screams Mg deficiency.  Possible nute overdose locking out your plant (which can be blocking P and K right now as well).

When was the last time you flushed?  What medium are you growing in?  Have you figured out exactly what you're feeding them yet?

As you should, he performed a spot on diagnosis with the data provided.

Hi yep found out he has been feeding them Canna A and B but he hasnt been checking the Ph of the nutrient solution at all as he thinks he knows what to add from previous grows but i am sure thats not a good idea!

The Ph of his last nutrient solution was about pH8 and he has been adding 30mls of both A and B to what i worked out to be 18 Litres of water.

Ive adjusted the pH of the solution to around pH6 and added Mollasses but if the amounts of A and B are wrong then its prob fucked up anyway so i will neeed to redo the whole lot.

He has a bottle of Canna PK 13 14 laying about so that can could be added.

Ive flushed them once while he was away last time.

Ouch, that's waaaay too alkaline for a soiless grow.  pH between 5.8 and 6.2 is what you want to shoot for.  Anything above that locks out P and K and N.  I'm not too sure how alkaline you can get before your micros stop being absorbed, but I'm sure it's not much farther past 6.2 if at all.

I thought the canna line had pH buffers in it, but I'm not sure.  I've never used that line personally but know plenty who have.  Crusty Old Bastard grows coco using the canna line I believe.  He might be someone to send a friendly message to and get some advice from
