Starter equipment

Hey guys. I'm new to the board. I'm a noob for sure. I've grown one time and it was a CFL grow. Didn't come out great to say the least. Barely got any bud, but it was decent bud.
I plan on going with a 400w hps and a growtent. It will be a little while until I can start, as i'm in apartments right now and will be moving soon. I know I will need a grow tent, the light and ballast, with a cooltube, some ducts and an inline fan with a carbon filter. a digital ph meter.
What else would you guys suggest? I want to grow around 4-6 plants at a time. I don't know exactly how much space i'm working with yet.

what method (soild/hydro/etc) will you be using to grow these plants? you dont necessarily need a digital ph meter. You can buy some litmus paper to do the job for ya. the more information you provide the more we can help.

Whoops. Sorry. Left that detail out. I definitely want to do soil as I heard it's less hassle and better taste. I'm not sure what other details to provide other than the ones I provided in the first post. So let me know if i'm missing anything (Which i'm sure I am.)

Soil is easier imo. Cheaper too, at least on a small scale. Why not build your own box using white paint, plywood and 2x4s? Its cheaper than buying a grow tent.
Instead of saying "I want x number of plants at a time" tell us what yield you want to achieve.

I'm pretty set on the grow tent as i've built a box before. Too much hassle ime. A friend of mine uses a grow tent and I really like the setup. Thanks for the suggestion though.
As far as yield, i'm not really sure. I'd like to get enough to be able to smoke on for a while. The more the better, but of course, I don't want to sacrifice quality for quantity. I've heard average is 2-4 ounces per plant, depending on plant and conditions of course. That's where I got my 5-6 plants from. A lb and a quarter or so. Would last me a few months and leave me a little to give to friends.

There is no average yield per plant. The yield of your plant depends on how long it is in the vegetative phase. You will have to ask someone with more experience, but I think under a 400 watt light you can expect a yield of about 1 gram per 3 watts (more or less depending on many factors such as strain, training technique, etc) per grow cycle if you do not make any serious mistakes. If you have some experience friends helping you out it will likely be more.

I tried soil and didn't and the plant died. Right now I have 11 plants growing, using hydroponics. IMO a lot easier than soil. A bit more money but the end result is much better. Yeild much higher than soil.

Hrmmm..Really? I've heard hydro grows a bit faster as well. This sparked my interest a bit.

I myself am also a newb to this, but from everything I've been told, hydro is the better way to go, with a better yield and better potency, but it's harder for a beginner to actually come out with anything decent.
I myself will be starting my first crop in soil unless a hydro system somehow falls into my lap and I don't have to pay for the start-up costs... lol

I don't know who told you that is harder for a noobie to get anything decent. Follow the insructions and change water every 2 weeks.
Go to this site for nute calulation. http://www.genhydro.com/
Buying the equipment is costlf you make your own it is a lot cheaper. I built my own hydro setup
Good luck.

How much did it run you to build it? I'm pretty good at building things, so maybe this is an option.

I bought the tubs at Lowes($10), PVC pipe(1/2 in), 1 pond pump(330 GPH), PVC glue, 1 pack of 1/2 90's, 1 pack of 1/2 Tee's, and 360 spray heads.
I bet the entire setup was under 100 dollars for this setup.

Post and time requirement I believe. If you want to go hydro, don't want to fuck with pumps and sprayers and shit, look into top fed water to waste systems such as a hempy grow. Growing in a soiless medium provides all the benefits you get from a hydro grow, with all the ease of use you get with a soil grow.
Plenty of people here (myself included) grow hempy style with great results.

Sounds good. I'm gonna check into that. I just want to go for effectiveness. I can spend a little more if I need to.
I'm tired of having to buy shitty brickweed :-( I'm ready to supply my own. So quality is very important.
