400w hps brighter than 600w hps?
    #461068 -

Hi there folks! I am new to this forum and I am glad i found it! Looks very helpful. I am admittedly an EXTREME novice at growing, i have only harvested twice in my short career so i apologize if this is not a great question, but i am perplexed.

I have a 4x4 tent with a 600w hps in it. The light housing and bulb have been used for 2 crops(from beginning of flowering). I had my first ballast go bad(it died after first crop) so i got a new one that worked great for my second flowering. I am on my third flowering now and for some reason, the 400w hps in my 3x3 tent seems a good bit brighter than the 600w in my larger tent. The plants under the 400w seem to be flourishing more and are significantly more dense. The distance between the lights and the plants is VERY close to the same, the fertilizer used is exactly the same. Not that this is a scientific way to figure this out, (or very smart or good for my eyes) but looking into the 600w it actually looks significantly less bright than the 400w... Could a ballast be sending less power for some reason than it should? i changed out the bulb itself to see if that helped and oddly enough its still not as bright as the 400w.. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance folks! i hope all is well with everyone

I'm about 99% sure it's just an old shitty bulb. get a new one and you'll definitely see a difference

What kind of bulbs are you using?  There have been some issues with hortilux's bulbs and the new electronic/digital ballasts.

Possibly, I can recommend ultrasun for your lamp.  I've been really happy with mine, they're 40-50$ cheaper then hortilux, and I believe magash has found that they actually produce more lumens then a hortilux bulb.
